If you aren't familiar with it, you buy server time but all the servers run is Folding@home, lets you get extra credit for your team.

Sounds like fun, but why not spend the money on own hardware? You should give us something like a $$/point figure
Edit:
After reading this: http://discuss.joyent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=151417 I lost intrest entirely

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
interested in it because I live in an RV, stationary, but still. The best I could hope to fit in here 3 "normal" sized computers. 30 bucks a month is all I could spare for it too, and I think folding farmer's prices started at 24 dollars

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
x2 nodes.. I wonder if you could not set up a more serieus investment to help the project in another way
Idk the exact hw details, but I think it's even maybe more worthwhile to donate money to PG then rent folders from him?

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
You're on-line, so you obviously have a PC, so you can start to contribute with it. Deduct whatever you think it costs you to run FAH from your $30/Mo and drop it in a coffee can labeled "For a new computer" and upgrade to something faster whenever you're ready. (Though donating it directly to PG is a fine idea, too.)
Paying money to someone like that isn't likely to actually help FAH. My guess is that the computer(s) run 24x7 anyway. All the time that he doesn't sell goes to his personal account, so paying him doesn't actually increase the work being done for FAH.

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
SOmething screwed up when posting previously, editing it to say as much. I'll fix it soon, but I have upgraded, and 2 more computers and I've fully saturated my ability to expand.(blowing breakers as is, have to "loan" the other 2 boxes out, once I get them, and my budget is limited)codysluder wrote:You're on-line, so you obviously have a PC, so you can start to contribute with it. A further edit: It's capitalism, if someone thinks they will make a profit, they will throw more servers up to run F@H, if they don't think they will make a profit, then it's only out of the goodness of their hearts, or marketing purposes. If enough people actually used folding as a service services, yeah, it would add more boxes to the project, and therefore contribute. And I can't help but think Folding Farmer is down because people were not using his/her service.(Reasons for using the service is mostly Competitiveness, though)

No offense intended, but that's one more reason why the forum doesn't permit anyone to promote commercial endeavors here.
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
The... "success" of one of these services [even legitimate ones] would encourage ripoffs and cons to pop up etc etc...
I like the coffee cup idea one of the respondants had.. if you're stretched for space etc then donations direct to the Pande group through Stanford University would be a great alternative, tax deductable also [if you're in the US]

Re: Folding Farmer, or other Folding as a service
I am still waiting on you guys to rule on that though ( you are still a mod right? no more green but I seen you post submision database entries I think ). Foldingfarmer is not the only link on these boards to people who commercially want to exploit the folding project.7im wrote:No offense intended, but that's one more reason why the forum doesn't permit anyone to promote commercial endeavors here.

He is no longer a mod but I think once you know how to access the database being removed from the moderator team has no effect
