Long 1-4 interactions on 2665 (Run 3, Clone 708, Gen 9)
Friends,
I am having trouble with the 5.92 SMP client and a 2665 (Run 3, Clone 708, Gen 9) WU. I get a Warning: long 1-4 interactions at 1 percent. I have restarted the client to find the same result, I have deleted the queue.dat file and the entire Work folder, same problem over and over again. I'm unsure if its always the same WU, but I think its a different one each time. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!
Rafa.

For some reason, I cannot attach the code, it says I'm not allowed to post URLs!

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
The "Warning: long 1-4 interactions" message is not really a problem, as long as no other error messages come after that. Just let it run...
However, the log posted above does look like a bad work unit. Delete it and move on.
But you might be having other problems... these errors look like a dropped network connection... or too much overclocking...
[08:43:45] Folding@home Core Shutdown: EARLY_UNIT_END
[08:43:49] CoreStatus = 63 (99)
[08:43:49] + Error starting Folding@Home core or unexpected system termination of core.

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
Thanks a lot 7im,
I don't OC my machine, so that's not the issue. From time to time I do have a dropped connection (I use a wireless setup), but I repeated the procedure 6 times with the same results. Also, if left running, the computer would be at 100% load but not 1% advance in nearly 3 hours when one % usually takes 20 mins. So after 5 or 6 deletions of the queue.dat and the work folder I finally got assigned a different WU and it has entered the 2% realm, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks again for the info and tips,
Rafa.

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
You may or may not be interested in the science side of this issue.
During the folding process, the atoms move in a lot of random motion (due to thermal energy) plus a certain amount of systematic folding motions. It the atoms get TOO close to each other, the standard equations of motion no longer apply. (Think of it as a collision rather than just "normal" interactions, but that's not entirely true).
Were the atoms "too close" to each other because of a computational error or was it because that's what was supposed to happen? Were the atoms just close enough to issue the message but the equations figured out where they were supposed to go anyway, or did they get so close that the subsequent motion was clearly wrong?
As you might expect, there's no way to identify WUs in which the correct calculations lead to this condition until you run the simulation, so some WUs are called "bad WUs" Others work their way past that point without help. Perhaps a future version of the core can include code to deal with these situations, but right now we just have to live with a small percentage of WUs that have this condition.

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
Thanks Bruce... I'm actually very interested in the scientific part of the folding process, although I would probably never delve to deep into the biological aspect of it. Makes perfect sense the proximity issues regarding computational problems, I do 3D animation and often dynamic simulation of clothing, hair and dynamic objects end with inter-penetrations because of the limits on computing resolution (a fine balance between speed and precision) and after the objects are past that point, the simulation just runs wild and deforms the objects beyond recovery.
Its a pity we don't have more info on the reason why the interactions took longer on that particular WU, and its a pity there isn't a particle viewer you can pop open just to see if the protein has become unstable a la Hollow Man!
Thanks again for the explanation, its nice to have some info behind the scarce message that was issued by the client.
Rafa.

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
Numerical precision is one issue, of course, but the inter-atomic forces which are smooth at "normal" distances also morph into quantum steps at very small differences, so even if you had infinite computational precision, there can still be problems.RafaPolit wrote:T... dynamic objects end with inter-penetrations because of the limits on computing resolution . . .

Re: Long 1-4 interactions error on 2665
Definitely not in case of this Wu. When a Wu crashes in identical way on different clients, different OS's and in different countries, this is not a hardware problem.7im wrote:But you might be having other problems... these errors look like a dropped network connection... or too much overclocking...
And as there are more posts on this forum about 2665 crashing at 32%, it is no coincidence either
I was fighting with 2665 0-348-31 for several days, kept crashing exactly at 32%. I say fighting, because as a result it just deleted unit, and as the server did not know what was happening it kept assigning the same again... in the end after four days of 24/7 work I got meagre 100 points, but what's morte important I got rid of that WU
Now, another 2665 (3-223-30) got past that magical 32%, so I hope it will finish all right.
Thanks for the scientific explanation BTW, was interesting to read
yours,
