Yes it's running systemd. I'm unclear why systemd or other services infrastructure would care whether it's in full screen terminal mode, where GUI overhead detracting from folding is minimized.
I see no disadvantage with folding lid closed (screen drawing less power). I'm treating it more like a headless server then. If it's on battery, drains to near 0%, and sleeps or hibernates or shuts down cleanly, so be it.

Lid closed means reduced cooling for most laptops.

You can save power by turning off the screen even if the lid is not closed.
Don't let the laptop sleep or hibernate while GPU folding or it can hit a bug (actually one bug in the core and one in the client that synergise) that will cause the client to endlessly download and fail WUs.
