Compuer with Raptor lake and Radeon RX550 doesnt' receive WU's

Post by queluomo1 »

Apologies if such a question has been already answered. Help please.

I have a core i5 Raptor Lake PC with Radeon RX550 switched on 24/7 built for the some scope of folding.
Most of the time it doesn't get any work units, then there's a short period of time that it seems to get them.
When I pause and restart, I do get a WU for the CPU, but extremely rarely for the GPU.

Can I receive an honest answer please? Is there a specific problem with AMD GPU's . I recently rebuilt an old pc for my friend with a much more recent budget oriented AMD GPU and I tested it on F@H and didn't get many work units.

I'm asking this because I'm in the process of speccing-up my near-future dream machine which will have a 16 core AMD processor and in my plans, the best AMD GPU I can afford. Should I go the Nvidia way instead (though I really don't like their business practices) ?

I wouldn't like to invest and then not getting results.

As for the system I spoke about, what do you suggest please?

Kindest regards,

Sergio

P.S. I'm not TOo technical so please help me out with specific instructions

RX550 is too old for folding. Other than that there is no problem with AMD GPUs getting any work

CPUs should be set to m3 or more threads for folding, in order for them to get work

Thank you for your reply

I'm trying to send a screenshot of how it's configured but I can't

System is set to use 10 out 12 cores

So I should upgrade the graphics card on this one.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately it doesn't.

I have to pause and restart to get any WU at all.

Do you suggest maybe uninstalling the client and reinstalling?

Store a screenshot in any of the photo storing websites and post a link to that image. Flickr is one of them.
Alternatively, log file content can be copy and pasted here easily.

Post by muziqaz »

Pause GPU device, pause CPU device.
Restart CPU device only. Then go into log section and copy everything since the resume action

I think you are being hit by specific fahclient bug. I take it you did not create resource groups? Wait for your current work to finish (set it to finish).
Click on the cog looking icon. You should see padlock looking icon on the right corner near the bottom.
Click on that, say yes or ok.
On the left hand side you should see Resource groups section, with only one entry (Default). Click on that.
Set CPU slider to 0 (zero), untick GPU box under "Enabled".
On the left hand side, click +Add, create a name of the group (CPU, or whatever you feel like it). Click on that new created group to select it. Push the slider to 10 (or whatever you want to use for CPU folding). Untick the GPU.
On the left hand side, again, click +Add, name the group GPU (or whatever you want it to be).
Click on that newly created group, and push the CPU slider to zero, tick the GPU, untick CUDA bit. Click Save at the top.
Now you should see 2 groups, each having separate devices under them (One with CPU, one with GPU). Now you can control them separately. Click fold next to CPU group, and leave GPU group paused. Monitor usual channels here for some news regarding AMD in the future, who knows, maybe your GPU will have some life left in it (very unlikely, but you never know).

Thank you so much for a very detailed, clear and easy to follow explanation.

I hope in future, folding at home also manages to solve the hybrid CPU problem by assigning different slots automatically. The same pc actually has a 13600k CPU, but after abysmal performance I had to switch off the economy cores from the bios. Now that hybrid CPU's are getting more common F@H would be nice to address those not so technical of us who are however, very willing to contribute.

Having said that, the current software has improved so much in user-friendliness over previous iteration.

Anyway, I wish to thank you again and I will be printing out the instructions, just in case.

Kindest regards,

Sergio

Hybrid core support will not happen.

To combat Intel's big.shittle CPU design, adjust the slider to the number of P cores you have, download Process Lasso. Use that program to tie fahcore_a8.exe and fahcore_a9.exe to those P cores. Go back to BIOS and re-enable E cores
