Extremely low PPD on 18227

Post by arisu »

This isn't a complaint so much as an observation. My Radeon 780M usually gets around 300k PPD, but with this project (at least with R78 C14 G20) it is getting only 80k, which is more than three times less than usual. That is less than I get with a 12yo mobile GPU that runs at only partial power.

I don't care about the points, but I want to make sure devs are aware so that any possible performance bug with this hardware and project combination could be looked into, assuming the low PPD really is reflective of low performance.

Remember when you asked your iGPU to be bumped to higher species? :D I remember...

It'll make the timeout even when it's throttled to 70% so I'm not worried about the project being too big. I just wanted to make sure there's no particular performance bug with this project/hardware combination. If it's expected that some projects will have much lower PPD and it's not abnormal, that's good enough for me!

I thought it might have been an anomaly because even the "too big" projects that the little iGPU was getting had normal PPD, the timeouts were just too short for it, but this project is different because it is the other way around: timeout is fine but PPD is very low.

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure this was known in case it wasn't expected. :)

Projects don't have performance bugs. Fahcores even don't. OpenMM does, and OpenCL does too :)
FAH cannot work on OpenMM issues as well as AMD OpenCL issues. AMD won't work on their OpenCL anymore :)
Just wait patiently for HIP. That will be supported more aggressively, as I will be able to put my foot down on AMD in fixing any issues with HIP
