Re: Assign Wait
We switched of any assignments to CPUs with 2 threads or lessffsmith20 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 11:36 am Can anyone tell me what is happening here? Started doing this 3 - 5 days ago.

Re: Assign Wait
Unfortunately, no.
Re: Assign Wait
Not all of them, apparently. I have a machine which folds on two threads and it recently got an assignment from project 18803, RCG 3,197,199.

Re: Assign Wait
And I hope it stays that way. Someone, I won't be naming them here, pushed hard to eliminate 2 CPU thread assignments without actually having an idea how many there were or what problems there were with them. There are projects that will work well on 2 CPU threads as long as you aren't using old or very slow processors.

Re: Assign Wait
It should have been disabled.
Joe, I pushed for that
Problem is that a lot of people who switched to v8 and read the client's install guide interpreted guidance wrong and gave GPU slots 1 or 2 CPU threads, instead of leave them free. For some reason client fails a CPU WU if it is downloaded that way.
This weekend I will try reproducing the issue, and see if the restrictions can be removed for at least 2 threads.

Re: Assign Wait
Which old and/or slow processors are you talking about? I fold on i5-3210M at reduced clock speeds (just 2.5 GHz), which I would consider as very old and slow, but it finishes all assignments it gets in just 20-25% of the timeout time window.Joe_H wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:40 pm And I hope it stays that way. Re: Assign Wait
Speed of the CPU is not an issue. People assigning 1-2 CPUs to a GPU is an issue

Re: Assign Wait
For example, there are some mobile Intel processors configured into low power devices such as laptops and NUCs with their clock speed limited to under 1.5-2 GHz for thermal reasons. Maybe not the best candidates to use for folding, but people have tried them. Another would be older processors which do not support AVX, those are slower running CPU jobs using the A8 core, and may not be supported on the A9 core.foxpy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:53 pmWhich old and/or slow processors are you talking about? Personally up until last year when the fan went bad I was folding on 2 cores of a laptop running using an i7-3520m processor. That was fast enough to finish easily on time. I used it to benchmark new projects to help determine which needed more CPU threads or faster processors. This usually resulted in a thread minimum, currently they do not have a CPU database for assignments.
Re: Assign Wait
I think I'm being bitten by this. I set 2 CPU threads so that I could GPU fold. Should I have not done this? What was the correct setting to only GPU fold on my discrete graphics card? My CPU isn't worth folding on, what setting should have I used to only GPU fold? I'm confused.muziqaz wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:46 pm It should have been disabled.

Re: Assign Wait
You’re supposed to be able to set zero cpus and still GPU fold.
Re: Assign Wait
The way I read the instructions, it sounded like GPU folding could fail with out the CPU slider being set to 1 or 2 threads.

Re: Assign Wait
All GPU assignments have min cpus 0, max 1.
So it should work.
There has been a recent report of this no longer working. It is possible you need to use a separate resource group for GPU folding with no CPUs. Or there could be a configuration problem on servers.

OK. I'll set CPU slider to 0 and give it a shot.calxalot wrote: ↑Sat Apr 12, 2025 2:46 am All GPU assignments have min cpus 0, max 1.
