random PC-restarts when folding on Radeon RX 6700 XT

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

random PC-restarts when folding on Radeon RX 6700 XT

Post by FritzV »

Hi out there,
randomly my PC restarts when I am folding using my Radeon 6700XT, identified as gfx1031.
Sometimes its going through, sometimes 20% or more, sometimes only 1% or even immediatly the PC stops working and restarts.
Without enabling my 6700XT everything works fine.
I checked temperature, clocking and much more I could think of - no clues.
I changed the board - no changes.

I'm running on an ASUS TUF Gaming X670E-Plus (latest BIOS) a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB RAM, XFX Radeon 6700XT (latest Adrenalin 24.2.1) with Windows 11 (also latest update).

Any hints? Appreciated. Thx.

The PSU maybe ? You didn't mention it ...

PSU should do: 1.000 W - be quiet! straight power 12 ...

Possible solution for me at the moment:
-- pause folding with ending (!) all (!) projects (many restarts required ...)
-- re-install of folding exe, using (old) data-drectory as the new one

Now it's running for a few days without restarts - well, I didn't use the PC in the meantime ...
I will tell what's happening in daily work ...

If it starts failing when using the system, you might have to disable adaptive power management on the GPU. I don't know how to do it on AMD, but on nVidia control panel, it's called "Prefer maximum performance" in power management setting.

Hi,
Thx for the suggestion. I will try in the AMD control to find an equivalent.
Meanwhile folding works fine even with hard working (on music and video).

I understand this comment is a bit late, but. There is no power management switch in AMD Adrenalin, AMD does it on the fly. You can lock the clocks and voltage though, but still those things are dynamic.
What AMD drivers don't like is multiple workloads on same GPU. So let's say you are folding on a GPU and then decide to play a game. Game will run crap, however drivers might decide to reset at some point. While annoying, it sometimes is inevitable. And it is extremely hard to trouble shoot these things. In the past (several years back) it was impossible to fold and game at the same time on AMD GPU. System and drivers would reset immediately. Now things have improved, but still not fully worked out.
Suggestion: pau GPU folding, if you are doing something else serious on your GPU (anything compute intensive, or even media transcoding intensive). Will save you a lot of headache.
And also try updating GPU drivers once in a while. You wouldn't believe the lengths AMD goes to, to improve their GPU drivers and fix bugs ;)
