Unavailable Temple University servers 129.32.209.200-207

Post by Andre_Ti »

Good day.
There was a problem accessing the Temple University servers 129.32.209.0/23.
WU without VPN is not available.
Can you please tell me whether access will be restored or the blocking is carried out unilaterally?
Example:

Code: Select all

The problem is still relevant.
Write if you no longer need help with folding.

What IP number are you connecting from? I have sent a message to the researcher running that lab.

Thanks for the feedback.
My ISP assigns dynamic addresses when a new session is established. Now it is 109.106.140.56.
The rest of the route is shown in the trace.

Have not heard anything new on this. About the only thing I can add is that there is a lot of spam reported from the ISP that has that IP range, it is possible it has been added to a block list. I have temporarily blocked several IP numbers from that ISP from this forum in the last few weeks myself.

Returning to this topic, I can demonstrate the result of accessibility around the world.
I draw your attention to the blocking of all Russian addresses.

Hello there. Currently I don't crunch for folding, my CPU is used for WCG.
Folding at home servers listed here are not available from my ISP too (AS50543). Traceroute command gives timeout stars at 8, 9, 16 and further hops.

Why do they spam from Voronezh or my location so much for ban appliance I have no idea. The only way if you want to continue folding, in situation herein, is that you should Look for proxies in Simpheropol, Evpatoria or outside Russia. Let's hope bad times for international science will soon pass away.

Treceroute often is blocked, so is not a reliable test. Better might be to do a telnet to that address on port 80.

If ICMP is blocked at target host as standard sysadmin rule and http(s:) is not blocked then yes, it's not reliable test. But I looked up last responding host in my tracert hop #15 - it's Temple University. Packets follow right way. Not only icmp packets and I do believe also http packets. Next host supposed at hop #16 is F@H work server. Where ICMP is blocked and it is OK, but http shouldn't be blocked you agree with it? I don't have telnet installed on my system but when I tested 129.32.209.202:80 & 129.32.209.202:8080 using iperf with small TCP window size - the response has timed out. Besides two external online tests: one inside Russia fails and another one outside Russia https://reqbin.com/ responds correctly

I would like if topic starter tries to retrieve confirmation that his provider, Svyaz-Telecom Voronezh, detected spam activity towards Folding At Home Hosts.

I hope that comes, but the spammers are persistent from Russian sites. As I was reading this Monday I was just finishing the process of deleting spam from an IP in Russia and blocking further spam attempts from that poster. They came back later in the day from a different IP in that city.

Right now the most common source of spam I see here on the forum is Russia. After that in no particular order are Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Poland and a few other former Soviet republics or Eastern European countries. Some of the ISPs seem to be looking away from the spammer activity, just collecting the cash paid for the accounts.

Today my team has turned 20 years old working. No further comments (you see it all anyway).

I would like to return to the topic of server unavailability and spam problems.

Now I'm folding on the GPU and I often have to wait for switching to other servers because the address 129.32.209.202 is now in the priority for the next task (maybe there is a key for the software to quickly skip certain server addresses, but I don't know about such). My list of main available servers from which I will download/upload WU 206.223.170.146, 128.174.73.78, 128.174.73.74, 140.163.4.200.
I still have confirmation of similar problems with access from other cities and from other providers of the Russian Federation.

The question is, if the spam from the Russian Federation is so high (my ISP was unable to confirm the mass mailing to Temple University), then why are other servers and my access to this forum active?
Also, the Temple University website is not available to me, but when VPN is turned on, access is restored.
As a result, the situation with such a point blocking is not clear.

I have in the past contacted the person who is in charge of the Temple F@h servers. He has not commented on this and chosen not to reply here. So I don't know the source of the blocking. It may be usage by the university IT of block lists supplied by other organizations or from another policy set by the university as a private institution.

I don't follow the sites that track DOS attacks, just spam sources. I only looked at two blocks of IP addresses connected to your ISP, both had spam reported as originating from there. Compared to some other sources, not at a high rate but some spam and not enough for me to block that ISP. This forum is on an entirely different server than those set up as work servers and can run under its own policies. As for spam from the Russian Federation as a whole, I see several posts a day that make it through the first spam traps, and several more account creations from known spammers that originate in Russia. For example here is the opening bit from a spam post that arrived this morning:
Это действительно важно, что вы знаете от советов по футболу, распространенные ставки и футбольные шансы. До тех пор, пока вещи хорошо сбалансированы и держали под управлением под управлением, спортивные книги добираются до прогулки с
The whole thing goes on for several paragraphs and links to a website in Russia. Not sure which they were pushing more, sports betting or participation in cryptocurrencies.

So if a VPN works, then use it for now. This situation will probably continue into the near future. The US has not imposed sanctions that include network traffic, but the EU has done so on the Russian Federation based on what I have heard from a network admin working there.
