No GPU Slots - No GPU Utilization

Post by n0ob123 »

i have a board with 9 GPUs, but none of them appear in my slots list. when I go into configure, the GPUs are not listed there either. I assume I need help to manually add my GPUs as slots?

when i run nvidia-smi it shows that they are not doing any work.

here is the nvidia-smi report:

This is the issue:
21:00:14: <gpu v='false'/>

This means that the client will ignore any GPUs and only use the CPU. Remove that flag, save, restart and all your 8 GPUs would (theoretically) spring to life!

There is no list you would select from.
Just try to add a GPU slot and see what happens.

If it comes alive you can do it another 8 times.

But as folding is not really comparable to mining you may be bottlenecked with so many GPUs on only 4 CPU Cores feeding them.
(There is aplenty communication on PCIe the CPU has to manage)

Humm... part of me is wondering what would happen if you had <gpu v='false'/> AND you tried to add a GPU Slot; would the client throw an error, would it implode, would it... only experiment if you're comfortable with your system and doing a fresh installation of the client (that's the worst case) :eugeek:

changed to <gpu v='true'/> in config file. i think i need to wait for my wu to complete, then restart to see what happens

Think I did this before.
As i cant remember any problems it seems to write a new config.xml without gpu false but adding the gpu slot.

Ill try it out to give a clear answer. :mrgreen:

Re: No GPU Slots - No GPU Utilization

Really appreciate that! Maybe adding a GPU Slot manually triggers the removal of <gpu v='false'/>... would be good to get a clear understanding if possible :)

It can stay in the config.xml
Seems like the later Slots are overriding the 'false' from the beginning.

The machine I choose to try it out did fold on CPU and GPU, now look what config it uses:

Code: Select all

<config>
  <!-- Client Control -->
  <fold-anon v='false'/>

  <!-- Folding Slot Configuration -->
  <gpu v='false'/>

  <!-- HTTP Server -->

[REMOVED]

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='CPU'>
    <cpus v='1'/>
    <paused v='True'/>
  </slot>
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'>
    <paused v='true'/>
    <pci-bus v='1'/>
    <pci-slot v='0'/>
  </slot>
</config>

Interesting... I guess <gpu v='false'/> means that it simply disables the auto-creation of the GPU Slots at startup but doesn't interfere with the auto-detection of GPUs. Thus, one can manually add in X GPU Slots assuming they are supported for folding.

I think youre right, as we can see in the first post, it clearly detects GPUs.
And detection is listed before reading the config.

Code: Select all

21:00:14:           GPUs: 9
[...]
21:00:14:<config>

You shouldn't need to be in the config file doing manual edits.
Did you install FAHControl on your system?
For Windows it's part of the install package but for Linux it's separate from the client.

You're running a quad core processor.
Each GPU will swallow a core.
Delete the CPU slot.
I think you will be doing really well if you get half of your GPUs folding.

Lastly, I assume this is a mining rig where each card is on a x1 riser?
I think the FAH client is refusing the cards because it doesn't have the bandwidth.
If your motherboard has x16 slots I would plug your cards directly into these.

so...

changing to <gpu v='true'/> in config file WORKED!!!! OMG!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!

PPD has increased 3,000% since i started this post. it's still climbing!!!!

I love this community. Thank you all who got me to this point!!!!!!!!!!
