Windows 10 suddenly stopped folding

Post by fah-toq »

Windows 10 Pro 2004 64-bit
Xeon 3.6 GHz
AMD Radeon 5700 XT
FAH 7.6.20

Was folding fine for months, woke up to find the machine crashed/frozen. Rebooted and it was in the middle of a Windows update. Now I can't get it to fold at all. I've tried reinstalling the client and it will fold very very slowly until I reboot and then the FAH client hangs on 'Updating'.

Here is the log from before I reboot.

Code: Select all

Someone will confirm but I reckon it is a driver issue ... reinstalling the drivers from AMD rather than the ones Windows Update will have installed should get your CPU refolding.

You are running a brand new release of the client ... not sure of formally announced yet but had noticed it was available a day or so ago ... that shouldn't be causing issues as you had the problem before reinstalling client.

I have tried both the current new AMD driver and the Windows provided driver released back in May. I have also tried FAH 7.6.13, the last client that was working on this machine and the newest 7.6.20, I get the same results.

I would first uninstall FAH incl. data.
Then the present GPU drivers have to be really deleted, like this: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/di ... nload.html
Then you can reinstall AMD drivers, and then FAH. And it should work.

Uninstalled FAH.
Uninstalled video drivers with Display Driver uninstaller from Safe made.
Let Windows find video card and install recommended driver.
Installed FAH 7.6.20.
It folds, really really slowly, until I reboot and then FAH hangs and FAH Control says 'updating'

I don't see why you always reboot?
After a new installation, it can happen that the first WU only uses 1 CPU (thread). It is annoying but not fatal.
Then please install AMD drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... rx-5700-xt
Those installed by Windows can be OK, but can also be insufficient (OpenCL support).

The drivers from MS Windows Update do not include required support for OpenCL. Without OpenCL the F@h client will not detect an usable GPU and will not configure a GPU folding slot. Please follow the directions given to use drivers downloaded directly from AMD which will include OpenCL support.

If you are going to be doing GPU folding, then you will want to disable driver updates through Windows Update and periodically get the drivers from AMD instead.

Disabled Windows Update.
Uninstalled FAH.
Uninstalled ALL video drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller from Safe made.
Reboot
Installed radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-20.9.2
which installed driver version 27.20.12029.1000
Reboot
Installed FAH 7.6.20.
Seems to grab a CPU WU but no GPU WU.
GPU says disabled, not sure if that is due to lack of WU or some other problem.
Uninstalled FAH 7.6.20
Reboot
Installed FAH 7.6.13
Grabs a CPU WU and the GPU says Ready (not Disabled)

Reboot (Why all the reboots? This is supposed to a dedicated FAH only system that will be in a remote location.
It needs to come up on its own after a power outage and start folding again)

Regardless of whether I have 7.6.20 or 7.6.13 installed neither one now launches on boot. I have to manually
click the icon on the desktop. And yes, I tired adding to the Windows Startup items but it didn't matter. Can no longer get the client to launch on its own.

No matter. Giving up for the evening. Going to see if it grabs a GPU WU over night or not.

By default, after an installation, the Power Slider will be on "Light" and FAH will then only fold on the GPU when the computer is idle. You just have to put the slider on "Full", either in WebControl or in FAHControl.
I would stick to 7.6.13 for now.
You may also be the victim of a problem that appears when you install FAH with a non-admin user on Windows. If this is folding rig, please install FAH using a standard admin-user (not the Administrator user, just a standard admin-user) and just accept all default configuration options during installation.
It would be nice to see your new log.

The new version (V7.6.20 or newer) would fix this issue since the new defaults would be:
Installation: C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient
Data: C:\ProgramData\FAHClient

Thus, any user can install it once with Admin permissions and then any user should be able to run it assuming that the shortcuts are correctly done :)

Just to close out this thread,

I was getting nvcuda.dll and missing OpenCL errors in the logs. On a whim I installed the NVidia CUDA software, rebooted and now the CPU and the AMD GPU are grabbing WUs and folding on 7.6.20. <shrug> Don't care, its folding. Still not folding on startup, but don't care, its folding. So far behind on points now need to fold for a bit to catch back up.

I am glad that you solved the issue... however, that's a very unusual method and one that I wouldn't think was possible. However, who am I to question the IT Gods.

The nvcuda.dll error in your log is expected since you have and AMD GPU and that error is only for CUDA detection. Given that you don't have Nvidia GPU, we won't recommend you to install any Nvidia drivers or CUDA software package.

@Joe_H (and others Mods/Helpers) ... This "Install Cuda fix for OpenCL issues on AMD GPUs" has actually worked for another folder using Win 10 and AMD GPU as discussed on Discord ... @muziqaz has I believe reported this "upstairs" so hopefully being investigated but for the moment may be worth using as a "Hail Mary" when trying to resolve AMD OpenCL issues? ... No guarantees but it may help :) ... even if it is just madness ;)

I have the exact same problem. Card is AMD Radeon Rx 5700 XT. I'm going to try the hack mentioned above...

The CUDA package is large, and intended for software development. I unchecked everything except the Runtime and the Driver. No dice, still fails.
