the message I was looking for was OpenCL: Not detected: Failed to open dynamic library . The solution to your problem is to reinsstall the linux OpenCL code.
Apparently that code got removed from many systems during the night. (where "night" is defined by this post:)
DocJonz wrote:The second box of code above shows it started about 03:51 (BST), so maybe someone working late on Friday at the US end has inadvertently glitched something?
I'm still narrowing down my search for answers to what/who might have glitched something on both Windows and Linux systems.

If somebody thinks whatever the're doing might glitch something, there is no perfect time to minimize the impact (but 03:51 BST is as good as any... although a lot of the USA is still active then.)

Hello Bruce,

This is what we are trying to tell you, it got not removed. In my case it was never there. And additionally my Linux is not installing any auto-updates. My logs files show that OpenCL was not working e.g. on 30th June, but still the CPU and GPU slots folded and both returned work units before it came to the sudden stop on 1st August.

User ZePompom tried to tell as well it clearly worked without OpenCL before.

Code: Select all

Indeed, according to the log, OpenCL was not detected at 06:10:36 (June 30th, while the slot was paused) and nevertheless, after unpausing at 06:33:56, the server 3.133.76.19 (after a few failed connections to 18.188.125.154) sent a GPU WU at 06:38:21 and this WU was successfully folded: https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu#proje ... 837&gen=19

But is this simply possible? Can a GPU fold without OpenCL installed?

From prior reports, it can, but not really. What there is a system that is folding with enough of the OpenCL support present, but not the specific library(s) checked for by the client. Or they are there, but not accessible by the client.

To give this some context, in theory all that should be needed is the driver and the OpenCL runtime support for that AMD or nVidia GPU. In practice what people have been finding in the past is that the driver installation packages for Linux have left unresolved links and other problems. Installing the dev-kit packages have appeared to fix those up.

Recent versions of Linux have added additional requirements for some such as the user that folding is running under needing to be part of the video and/or render groups to access the GPU and its support files.

So, not sure what has broken this time, but there are a lot of places where something apparently minor could change and cause problems.

Thanks for the comment.
To me it just looks alike, that certain OpenCL functions were utilized and probably accidentally working.
Whatever changed from about 1st August, might use other OpenCL functions that are not properly working and installing the dev kit fixed that.

Would be interesting to see if there is a dip in total of returned GPU WUs around this date or if we here in the thread are just rare exceptions (which is what I am thinking right now).

I suggested a change in GPUs.txt and it seems there was no change.

So far everyone is on Nvidia?

Has anyone gone back a Nvidia Driver version? (Current driver is 451.67, there is a 'hotfix' of 451.85) Has anyone tried a previous Client version? (current is 7.6.13)

Installing the dev package of opencl just changes the message into

Code: Select all

OpenCL: Not detected: clGetDeviceIDs() returned -1
So the next question is now: What to do to clGetDeviceIDs() return a device?
I am on Nvidia, driver version is 440.100

@JimboPalmer: When I was doing all the re-installing yesterday I reverted back to Nvidia legacy version 445.87 once for testing, but it did not improve anything (so I reinstalled the current version 451.67 and stayed with it since then - Win10 64). The hotfix version you mentioned is not available/offered for my GPUs 2080 Ti when searching at the Nvidia drivers site - even when showing all version types. I have not yet tried a previous F@H client version.

i have been folding for months on my 2070 super, but yesterday it stopped folding.

3900x is folding just fine but both my gpus are trying to get assignments from server 192.0.2.1.

To Linux users : Is your user running FAHClient in the "video" group (or the equivalent for your distribution) ?

Re: Waiting for work on 192.0.2.1 ?

Post by CarolusMagnus »

Hi from France, same issue here.

My system - Windows 7 pro 64, 24GB RAM, Intel Core i7 4790K, NVIDIA RTX2070S - has been running for months without troubles, just stopped friday night,
trying endlessly to connect to 192.0.2.1.

I've reinstalled the latest NVIDIA drivers and FAH client, with no luck.

To check the availability of Open CL and CUDA , I've run GPUPI 3.3.3, it shows Open CL 1.2 and CUDA 11 are available and running; I could compute Pi using both.

My other PC - Windows7 pro 64, 4GB RAM, Phenom II x4, AMD RX580 runs without any issues.

Here's an extract of the log, more if needed:

Apparently NVidia proprietary drivers install CUDA. FAHCore_22 does not currently use CUDA, it requires OpenCL. On Windows, when you install the NVidia proprietary drivers, you get both CUDA and OpenCL. On linux, I think those are 3 separate packages.

Nevertheless, if you're certain you were folding with FAHCore_22 on your GPU you must have had OpenCL installed from somewhere. There's a known bug, though: If your GPU is misconfigured, it's possible for it to appear to download a WU and run it, but it actually runs on the CPU, not on the GPU.

Bottom line: Errors involving 192.0.2.1 mean that a device cannot be used because FAH did not detect it about 100 lines from the beginning of FAH's log -- which is why I need to see that configuration step to help you.

We see the same problem on Windows and Linux. So I doubt it has something to do with OpenCL library, NVidia drivers or Windows vs. Linux.
In addition, I doubt that my Athlon 200GE is capable of executing a GPU workunit on CPU and achive more than 3 million PPD like the system did many months without issue.
