Motherboard Burnt! Folding 24/7

Post by chungenhung »

I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev 3.3 that died yesterday.
It has a Q6600 and has been folding for months 24/7.
Then, I decided to put in a 8800GT to see how many PPD I can get.
I left it on for several hours, went out, then when I got back, I realize the machine is OFF.
It would not turn on, so I swap out the power supply and it turns on, but no screen.
Anyways, finally, I decided to take the whole thing out of the case, then I saw the burnt mark all over the CPU power phase area.
Both Front and back is burnt.
So I guess the powersupply couldn't handle all the power load of a OCed Q6600 B3 stepping and a 8800GT and decided to burn up the board.
I have not tested the CPU and Memory yet, I hope them are fine.
The 8800GT is fine and is crunching on another machine now.

How do I attach a image? do I need to uploaded it somewhere? Can F@H host it directly?

Folding didn't burn out your motherboard, overclocking the CPU and overloading the PSU did that. That's the risk you take when run a computer out of spec.

You have to host your own images, or use one of the free online services, and then use image tags to link in the image. toTOW did something similar a few months back, and posted pictures of the burnt board. This thread should probably be merged back with that one...

When doing overclocking you should always run a prime95/orthos test.

What's ur power supply?
Usually i loop 3dmark to stress both CPU and GPU for periods of time.

It could be overheating too, seeing that your MB's phase power has no copper heatsink

Indeed © ... Here's the "famous" thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=657 ;)

Such things happen ...

These stresstests are not efficient enough, especially when the machine is intended to fold ... you should use this one instead : viewtopic.php?f=14&t=430 ;)

The area around the CPU can get very hot on these boards.
I have some of these boards, GA-965P-DS3 Rev 3.3, running in an open configuration, no case, and when I measured the temperature of the coils and mosfets, using an infrared thermometer, that are situated between the CPU socket and the edge of the motherboard, I got readings of over 174°F/79°C.
After installing some heatsinks the temps were knocked down to 144°F/62°C.

Again, this is open air, so one can easily imagine that there could also be a lot of heat trapped in a closed case situation.

I am not blaming Folding for it.
The power supply was of questionable quality.
I am leaning towards overloading the power supply as the culprit.

You may not have intended to say FAH was the cause, but by putting both "burnt MB"
and "FAH" in the title, most people will associate one with the other.
