Project 13415 problematic or WU dumping a new hobby?

Project 13415 problematic or WU dumping a new hobby?

Post by HugoNotte »

I have noticed that when I get a WU of this project, usually I'm not the first whom it has been assigned to. Usually that WU would have been assigned to 2 or 3 other volunteers before me, all of them showing code "Faulty 2" and a processing time of 0.007 days.
Now I'm wondering whether there is a problem with these WUs that they fail so often or whether it's simply a matter of people dumping these WUs, after all they seem to be highly unpopular due to their low atom count and low ppd, specially on higher end GPUs.
Two examples:
https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu?p=134 ... ne=5&gen=0
https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu?p=134 ... e=43&gen=1

Fixed both links, the URL becomes something invalid after the page is loaded:
https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu?p=134 ... ne=5&gen=0
https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu?p=134 ... e=43&gen=1

Seems some people are cherry-picking indeed. I've taken a few screenshots of the users' pages in question, snapshot of their current returns.
Some of those people run multiple GPUs, which seem to drop certain projects rather consistently.
Surely that can't be coincidence?

There was another thread on here where someone with a Radeon VII legitimately had faulty returns for 75%+ of these WUs. Thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=35642

My Vega 64 hasn't failed one yet.

Faulty 2 shouldn't be a dumped WU. As far as I know, to get Faulty 2, it requires a bad return. Deleting the work folder doesn't seem like it would do this.

It seems to have high failure rate. Deleting WU by user will not show up on the list as faulty2. If folder is deleted there's nothing much to upload.

13415 is ok on my old GPU. Haven't been assigned to newer one.

According to bruce, the FAH client does report dumped WUs back to the servers. Dunno, I was just wondering, since a I have read a lot about people dumping WUs they don't like recently, specially those of project 13415. But if those ones are genuine faults, maybe Dr John Chodera might want to have a look at what's going wrong.

He and his team will be watching the server logs very carefully given the importance and test nature of these projects :)

I have seen this Faulty2 a lot with any WUs all the time. For example one of the latest WUs today.

By the way, the other teams in this are LinusTechTips and CERN. You think they are cherry picking?

CERN - highly unlikely.
LinusTechTips - few individuals maybe.

But the amount of FAULTY2 seems to hint to a bug or an issue with a certain generation of cards, or drivers.
Personally, haven't had a single one.

P13415 has been running OK on my RX 570 (Ubuntu 18.04.4) with the latest drivers (20.20).
I was wondering about the low credits, and whether there was a problem with the scoring or my card.
But I am glad to find out it is just low atom count. I will let them run 24/7.

This group of projects, 13412-13415, are using some new methods as part of the F@h participation in the COVID Moonshot project. So they are a bit experimental and they are seeing a lot more variability than has been seen in the past on projects. JohnChodera is running these and is aware of the problems. He has also posted in response to a few of the other topics connected to these projects.

I am getting "crashes" on my RX 570 running under Win7 64-bit (Radeon 20.4.2 drivers), though they do not show up as errors. The work units seem to complete normally. However, they get hung up at the end of one work unit, or the beginning of another, and leave some detritus behind.

For anyone paying attention, count me as another folder who has this same issue (w/Vega 64, Win 10). Happened three times where I got a BSOD or black screen right as a new WU is downloaded and the current WU finishes but did not get sent. Upon reboot, start the client, the WU does get sent but there's no logging of it. (I know it gets sent because it eventually shows up on apps.foldingathome.org/wu ) I also get the two WU's listed in the dialog.. the one downloaded previously plus a new one that downloaded when the client started. I mention two of these crashes in the thread I linked to above.

I think we need to report it as instructed here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=35658&start=30#p338448

I haven't found the right files yet, and will have to try again.

I have not had a P13415 error (of any kind) in almost two days on my two RX 570s, one on Win7 and the other on Ubuntu 18.04 (running 24/7).
It looks like they have found the major problems.
