Status stuck at "ready"

Post by tua84897 »

My web browser is stuck at "ready" and folding will not begin. I've pasted the error log below. I just installed, so all settings are default. Any ideas what the issue is? Thanks!

Looks like you cannot receive files from the FAH servers. Are you behind a firewall which may block some connections?

Foldy - It's on my office computer, so I'd assume so. (I've gotten permission from the powers that be to run FAH)
Is there any way around it in the application, or do I need to go to my office's IT guys?

Depending on where the firewall is set, and what permissions you have on your computer, you might need to contact the IT guys.

Basically the FAHClient process needs the same access as a web browser like Chrome, IE, Edge and so on. It transfers files up and down using HTTP over ports 8080 or 80. The default settings for many firewalls or anti-malware apps will deny that for FAHClient but allow these transfers for "known" browsers. If that is the case, an exception would need to be added to allow FAHClient to do this.

So, if the blocking is being done locally on your PC and you have the access to change the settings, then you should be able to add the exception. Otherwise someone from IT would need to do that. At the company level if a firewall exception needed to be added to a firewall between the internal network and the rest of the Internet, then IT would usually be the only ones able to do that.

When you talk to your company's IT guys, ask them if you're behind a proxy and if so, how to access it directly. FAH can be configured to use many versions directly.

So I talked to the IT guys, we don't have a proxy server, we have a Sonicwall firewall. Is there an in-application work-around to allow FAH through the firewall or will the IT guys need to change the firewall settings?

The SonicWall might be blocking F@H connections as it isn't a web browser but is using ports 80 and 8080.

Just to see what happens, can you follow this troubleshooting guide from your system and see what happens: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=17794

PantherX: Went through the guide, there were some steps I couldn't complete since I don't have permission (I've asked our IT guys to look at the firewall, but I want to try to resolve it on my end too.)

I tested these two links in my chrome browser:

F@H AS1: https://assign1.foldingathome.org/
F@H AS2: https://assign2.foldingathome.org/

and they showed what they were supposed to show. Same deal with copying the website from the log. So that would seem to confirm that our firewall is blocking the FAH application but allowing Chrome through. So guess we would just need to put FAH on the firewall's whitelist?

I tried to PM you a picture, if the link takes you to a FaceBook album, it should be the last picture.

It is a screenshot of the settings in my Windows firewall for Folding@Home.

Yes, that is what is needed. Specifically the FAHClient.exe file on the Windows computer needs the same permissions as a web browser for upload and download. Have not seen someone post the details of doing that on a SonicWall, but ports 8080 and 80 using HTTP over TCP. Port 8080 is the preferred one, port 80 is the fallback port used if a connection can not be made over 8080.

It has been a while, but as I recall the FAHClient executable has an .exe extension on Linux and OS X as well. But my memory could be off.

Ok, the IT guys added an exception for F@H, but it's still having the same issue. Log is a bit different now

Re: Status stuck at "ready"

It seems that the client can now successfully communicate with the Assignment Server. The AS instructs the client to talk to a particular Work Server which has WUs that match the client's preferences. The client attempts to talk to the WS but that fails. I believe that the firewall might be blocking those connections. If your Internal IT team needs a list of IP Addresses to be whitelisted, all of them are here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

your IT team may be expecting FAHClient to be using DNS. Most of the communications is done with explicit IP addresses which is relatively unusual in modern internet communications.

Whitelisted the IP addresses in the firewall, still not working. It's displaying the description of the protein, ETA, estimated points, etc in my web browser, but it's still stuck on "ready"

The log has changed too, here's the new error message:

"Failed to read stream" generally indicates a problem at the server end as does Received short response, expected 8 bytes, got 0. (though it might be a firewall issue). I

'assign3.foldingathome.org:80': 10002: Received short response, expected 8
