What can I do with the points?

Post by Fredy46 »

Hello

Hello
I find a lot of information about the points you can collect here (and much more).
But what I haven't found, is an answer to why I collect points here.
What can I do with it?
Maybe I have overlooked the information?

Thanks for help :)

You can compete with others who are also collecting points.

you can be proud of your contributions.

(In other words, nothing.)

Over time they can actually be relatively useful as a "metric" for monitoring your own kit … You get used to a certain level of points per day/week and if these shift it can give you a bit of a heads up that something might not be as you expect.

I mainly see them as a handy metric for how my son's 2018 6 core (12 thread) + GeForce GPU is beating the pants off of my 2012 iMac i7 4 core (8 thread) whose GPU us not usable for folding....

iMac: 30,000 pt/day
Linux box: 275,000 pts/day.

Two things. First, as mentioned they are good metrics of speed. You know when your effort is maximized (if that is your goal of course).
Second, it is a kind of confirmation your contribution is worth it. You don't need to check every log file to see if your WUs have been successful or not.

F@H points are just like every other useless internet points. Gamification to get more engagement.

F@H is a grind...in a very good way! It's like every other gaming grind we've ever been involved in. It takes a long time to get to the top, it can be sorta boring along the way, and at the end all you get is some more relatively useless armor or a fancy weapon. The F@H grind has one key difference: the end result can be to help science defeat diseases that are sickening and killing humans. That's a grind I'm happy to be a part of. 8-)

Not anymore though, so many people joined the project that sometimes all my systems fold all day every day, then sometimes they do hardly anything for a week.
We put up part of our render farm on the project on march 28th, making easily 10m points per day for a while then it just went down hill from there and has not recovered since april 9th. Yesterday we earned 1.1m points total.

It's great for the project, but means I need to find a new benchmark. We used to deploy a disk image with F@H to benchmark new systems and let it run for about a day or two, that's impossible now.

Welcome to the F@H Forum fold_all_the_things,

Currently, the demand for WUs has exceeded the supply for WUs. Thus, there's a shortage. However, work is happening on various levels to resolve this as fast as humanly possible during the pandemic.
