See % or FLOPS each country is contributing

Post by kenny90 »

On stats, I think it could be useful to see what % or how many FLOPS all the users in each country are contributing to Folding@home. Competitiveness is something normal between users (credit or WUs) and this could be useful to incentivate more users joining.

Interesting concept … So as a Brit, if I am using one of the CONUS hosted GPU hosts like vast.ai would that count as UK or USA? … If I use a US ended VPN is that UK or USA? … If I am an American working abroad would I want that to count as the country I am in or the USA? … minefield of challenges maybe … and I reckon the stats are struggling to just deliver what they already try to and I'm not sure if it would add anything to the science or actually to recruitment … but I do like the thinking.

Possibly make countries be like teams: pick which one you want to contribute to. But that enhancement should be very very low priority, they are overloaded as it is.

1) I do not recall ever telling F@H what country I am in. (I would have, as you can see by looking right ->)

2) IP addresses are not grouped by country. (to some degree they are grouped by continent)

3) I fold 24/7, so you can't guess where I am by when I am active. (For ten years, I was a moderator in a chat room for terminally ill children, and I knew about where in the world you where by when you showed up to chat)

4) perhaps you could do a tracert for every WU, but why would you?

A very long ago, one of the researcher manually pinpointed the locations from where the WUs were coming from. It did result in this map (I can't find the original one): https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/imag ... f8TMOXCg&s It was a manual process that took a while.

Of course, the situation is a lot different now but it would be a cool feature to have a map in real-time of where the Servers are and the traffic they are receiving, how many flops, CPU/GPU WUs etc. ... something like this: https://cybermap.kaspersky.com/

If someone manages to produce a real time map like the Kaspersky one I will be really, really impressed … but I so hope someone does - it would be incredible !!

Sukrit Singh did a map for his projects for the month of April.

Somebody write an enhancement request and maybe somebody will volunteer to produce the real-time map.

Yes, I can recognize several known island groups on Sukrit Singh's map. And No, we don't have any known dolphins folding.

Some of the island nations are small, so hard to show land on that scale. Their assigned blocks of IP numbers may have individual numbers or groups of numbers being used elsewhere than physically within the country.
