Would there be a benefit to split my cpu cores? 6core no ht

Post by confused.brit »

Hi,

I have a coffee lake Intel i5 which has 6 cores but no Hyperthreading. Core speed 4.0-4.32ghz
I know i need to keep one core for the GPU, but would there be any point to splitting it into 2 cores of 3 and 2, to do more projects, or leave it at 5 for one project faster?

You will earn less points in total if you split it.

Better fir your case to use 1 slot of 4 or 5 CPU cores.
It is a case of diminishing returns the more you split it up.
Splitting CPU into multiple slots is more for higher end CPUs with 20+ cores.

Hardware configuration: FX8320e (6 cores enabled) @ stock,
- 16GB DDR3,
- Zotac GTX 1050Ti @ Stock.
- Gigabyte GTX 970 @ Stock
Debian 9.

Running GPU since it came out, CPU since client version 3.
Folding since Folding began (~2000) and ran Genome@Home for a while too.
Ran Seti@Home prior to that.

Depends on OS and what you are doing with it.

If folding gpu on Linux, then yes, but you only need to split one core off. Use it to drive a dedicated FAHClient instance that does nothing but feed the video card. Let the system handle cpu time scheduling for any CPU instances you are running. The GPU is more time and cpu time critical than CPU. If your CPU client doesnt get enough cycles who cares, a single wu is worth not a lot. If you are running a 1080 or 2080 and it doesnt get enough cycles, you could be dropping thousands of points. That of course assumes youa re in it for the points. If you aren't then diregard anything I said prior to this.

If on Windows, do whatever. Its already inefficient. Core separation is too much hassle on Windows. Just do whats easiest for you.
