get a new WU

Post by Stealthwolf »

I finished a series of WUs and then got one ... 13870 .. that's supposed to run 24 hrs. That's two days+. How do I change the WU .. delete the one that's assigned and get one with a *much* shorter time to run?

Thanks ....

Hardware configuration: none anymore, FAH doesn't want it, it seems.

I don't think that's possible. OR at least not in a supported way.

However, maybe it won't take that long - I too had an estimated time of 24 hours recently, but when I looked back a few hours later it was down to 5 hours.
So maybe it's merely the initial estimate that is off.

(I'm sure others will come with help regarding getting rid of WUs.)

Welcome to the F@H Forum Stealthwolf,

If the WU is going to take 24 hours, I am guessing that you plan to run your system for 12 hours a day hence the 2+ days? Do note that as long as you return the WU before the Timeout period, there's no problem at all. Moreover, dumping WUs that are normal is hurting science and not allowed (commonly known as cherry-picking). You don't really have much control over what WU you get, you get the best WU for your hardware to make most of your contributions :)

When you start a WU that you haven't folded before, the initial estimate is guaranteed to be off. It knows you've completed 0% of the WU in about 0 minutes. so there's absolutely no information from which to extrapolate. Wait until more of the WU has been completed.

Mine usually shows a good estimate after 1% is completed

Thanks to all for the replies ... I really appreciate it.

Fired up the laptop this morning and .. WOW .. the time dropped to about 3 hrs. Looks like it's happily running and I'm happily watching. This is still a bit of a 'learn, don't panic' time!

PantherX .. thanks for the reminder that ALL WUs are an advancement. Apologies. Yes, the 12 hrs. is my workday .. which is centered on Covid-19 (in IT) and I guess that was the influence.

Thanks again!! Onward......

I usually fold a 13870 in about 2.5-3 hours. And it has been known to say 24 or more hours. Just to reassure you.

If you have concerns about the length of time a WU is taking a couple of things worth doing are to .. 1) look in the log and check the number of steps - 1m+ may indicate issues .. 2) post the top 200 lines or so of your log and the part showing the WU you are concerned about to the forum (link for help on doing this in sig block earlier in this thread) preferably getting the WU from download to current … If you put the PRCG (Project Run Clone Gen) from the log as the topic header this will give people a chance to give you better help and save people speculating on what may or may not be the problem :)

Hi, Neil ...
Thanks for the reply .. I appreciate it. I will be keeping your instructions if this happens again .. and so far, it hasn't. The longest that has popped up before and after the 24 hr one .. that wasn't .. has been around 3 hours. I run F@H on medium unless my work is already overworking the laptop .. so I'll drop it to light. The log is interesting to look at anyway (!) .. the start/end info.

Thanks again!

cheers ...
