FAH infrastructure failed to load clients with payload WUs

Hi! Thank you for the idea of share folding power!

I start folding at home since about 15 of March, 2020. My client processed about 30-40 WUs and successfully uploaded results. I fold anonymously.

Besides constantly log messages such as

even my small power client wasting about 50% of time waiting to upload and to get new WU, during which it could folding new WU, but can't get it to start folding.

1) If your servers can't answer to all clients with new WU, then did you ask any of cloud engines (Google, MS, etc.) to temporary get a part of their storage space and connection servers infrastructure??? Does all of them against mankind, so human made company against themselves so they will not share a part of their resources?

It was about server side. Now about client side: FAH client.

2) Why unsuccessful tries to get new WU increase delay so much to re-request new WU next time? Starting from 5 minutes, goes through 10 and 30 minutes - I think it is ok to do not make DDoS of servers. But why further delay steps becomes about 4 hours of waiting before to request new WU? Why so much wasting time?

3) If to fold with --idle flag (waiting default 300 secs of PC idle) then does operation of uploading results and downloading new WU postpones to idle state instead of get it as fast as possible while server can share it and only then to wait for idle for folding? So, does FAH client works smart to upload results and download new WU instantly even client uses --idle flag for folding?

4) I got something weird behaviour: download action completely hangs on:

After pc reboot I restart FAH clint and it starts normally, got new WU and starts folding.

5) Why last update of FAH client dated as 2018 year? Do you think FAH client is good enough to let it be as was a long time ago? In 2018 it was close to perfect?

Hardware:
Fanless (passive cooling) mini-pc having full-metal aluminium case. Videocard is embedded in CPU chip of Intel Core i5-8250U (Hyper-threading is off in UEFI, so 4 physical cores = 4 program threads). Folding using as 2-3 cores of CPU. To prevent overheating using built-in CPU modes in UEFI: normal TDP is 15W, switched to configurable TDP-down mode which is 10W. All 4 cores loaded with FAH to 100% for hours of working has temperature no more than 56C. Average clock speed of every core is 1700..1900 MHz. Temperature of air in room is 20-23C.[/i]

Many offers have been received. There are limited F@H staff to bring up new servers. It is being done as fast as possible.

The algorithm is designed to protect servers that go offline, so they are not swamped when they come back. If the server is overloaded, then more retries won't help.

Sorry, don't know. I don't use "--idle". you should be able to tell by observation.

Random hang, quite possibly related to server overload.

Do you have specific problems with the client? There is no point in changing it unless something can be improved, and that improvement is worth the effort involved. The programmer time available to F@H is limited, and has to cover cores, client, Control, and various servers. Client side software is supported on three major platforms over several versions. Client changes are on hold during the present crisis, to avoid any possibility of problems on rollout.

Some of these answers are posted previously, may I suggest that a search is a good use of time before firing off long lists of questions.

There is a known bug in FAHClient that pops now and again on downloads and uploads. Occasionally the client does not detect a connection that has stalled or broken, often connected to high network traffic, and never auto-retries the connection. Normally the client will retry within 15-30 minutes. If you have multiple folding slots, the failure to retry only affects the one slot.

At this point the only way to get the request to resume is to either restart the FAHClient process after pausing any active work, or reboot your system.

Also (2)th item: still think what 4 hours delay to check connection is too much wasting time. may be 1 hour is better. But you know better than me. I just suggest w/o detailed knowledge of what's going on.

There are always new clients under development but with limited resources it takes a long time and for the most part, before the recent "upswell" (I think of it as the mother of all tidal waves) in community size. the client (though not without its faults) coped admirably and was fit for purpose .. Less than a month ago this was still true, but now after a 20x growth in the numbers of people trying to fold its flaws become very easy to criticise - but I would suggest that it is still doing remarkably well under the circumstances ... I am sure as the team get a chance to address the various issues that have occurred whilst they are scale up to meet demand the next version of the FAHClient will incorporate the lessons learned.

The FAHClient is one part of a fairly complex whole - one that is currently the fastest compute resource on the planet (and probably can be faster once the issues are worked through) and has many components (the ones that do the actual science and manage throughput) that are likely to be more recently released versions than the FAHClient.

To add to the point, a new client will not go into test while there is so much really urgent work to process (there is no spare test resource, and a risk of breaking things), and all available programming effort will go into urgent server upgrades. The client is only doing what is has done for a long time, no individual client is doing extra work and its server interface is not known to have problems. The servers, OTOH, are handling 20x as much work (or even more -- many of the new clients are high-end) and have benefited / will benefit from some urgent work.

I've completed investigation on how idle mode of folding affects network activity of FAHClient.

Before WU processing will be completed, I stop folding and execute it in idle mode with 2 minutes idle delay.

Conclusion: FAHClient's idle mode dedicated for calculation process itself. Network activity of FAHClient does not affected by idle mode (which is great as I think: it is ability to get/send WU during all time so then the idle time comes, WU will be ready for calculation with greater probability comparing to situation then all operations of FAHClient would be postponed to idle state, leading to hours of idle state could be wasted in tries to get new WU and only then start calculations in remaining idle time).

So possible lack item (3) is not present in FAHClient.

if to start FAHClient in idle mode w/o any WU downloaded earlier, then FAHClient will wait idle time to start connection to get WU. So idle time dedicated to high-load calculation will be wasted in tries to connect to server to download new WU to compute.

You can hardly call idle time wasted. By definition the computer isn't doing anything at that time.
Best not to worry about it given the huge influx of folders and limited server capacity.

There's an old expression "There are no atheists in foxholes" which in a rather direct way is suggests that people on the battlefield think and feel differently than when they're at home, pondering a beautiful flower. I think you'll have to understand that current COVAID crisis is much like a battlefield environment and the staff that might happily accept some or all of your suggestions at some other moment in time aren't already stretched to their physical and emotional limits expanding FAH's capacity to keep up with the rate at which new clients are being brought online.

Scientific research is proceeding within the constraints of the current server bandwidth limitations. Humans are extending those limitations on a regular basis. Let's concentrate on getting the results published so that other scientists can add to what we're learning. Read https://foldingathome.org/news/ for more information.

Hi, ipkh, bruce!

I read all answers earlier and yours also. Moreover: I understood them before yours kind of additional clarification. I point lacks and understood that fixes postponed to future after COVID19.
If you ask what is in my last posts for, it is very easy to understand: davidcoton suggest to make an observation of item (3) by myself. I made it: I got experiment data, but I did not collect that data individually into "secret box": I want to share results with others: community users and just readers searching the info to save their time and efforts to get answers and I did that in that posts.

In a few days will try to publish separate thread of experimental data on using FAHClient folding process in point of view of comparison processing core number vs performance vs temperature vs power consumption, but this is for CPU, moreover: mobile CPU (i5-8250U inside of fanless mini pc). Also I will suggest how to try to fold on CPU of fanless PCs (to prevent overheating). Data already collected. Most weird (uninteresting) part is going: preparing description to issue.
Finally done in another forum section.

I realized that for last several days (about a week, may be two) I do not see any problems with FAH infrastructure:

-) new WU successfully downloaded before current WU is done;
-) uploading result of folding is excellent (but previously was not bad also).

So, now infrastructure itself works well for me (without any idle). And client version also changed to 7.6.9.

Glad it is running better for you … It is really hard for new folders joining in the middle of a massive infrastructure expansion and server overload scenario - problems seem to be everywhere and take ages to resolve … In reality, even though is isn't a great experience, it actually was a massively positive time (errors and all) with a huge increase in processing power and science throughput achieved (even with all the issues) and with surprisingly little pain.

Oh yes, there was pain, and frustration and inefficiencies - and there still are, with ongoing work to continue to resolve overload and server issues - but it is getting better … New clients (with a few associated niggles) have rolled out, a new gpu core (again with a few niggles) - but there has been more expansion, development and progress in the last month or so than for years.

Thank you for sticking with it and helping identify issues .. You may find there are still a few around that will impact you but the team will try to respond and address these as they happen.
