Is it possible tap directly into one of these servers?

Post by Unclebadtouch »

Can one tap directly int one of these servers via advanced settings: 140.163.4.231 / plfah1-1.mskcc.org or 140.163.4.241 / plfah2-1.mskcc.org.
I know it's hard to get W/U's, now, but I'm seeing people who I was on track to overtake in a very short while starting to pull away, and the time to overtake them is growing ever farther apart.

Another question: I have two PC's. One runs a 970 and a 1080. The other runs a 2080 SUPER. They both fold under the same team and user, via the same ISP. I am noticing that my 2080 isn't getting shit for work, while my 970 or 1080 is getting some work, still not much, though. Do you think it would be possible that if I shut down the PC w/ the 2 cards I might see my 2080 start getting some work

In the big scheme of things I reckon you shutting down one of your machines is likely to make zero difference to your chances of getting work on the other ... sorry

About the only thing to add is if the wait between work requests gets too long, 3-4 hours, you can pause the folding slot for a minute or two, and that resets the timer. Please do not overuse.

UPDATE:
I don't believe my 2080 was getting a single W/U. At least not while I was sitting in front of my screen - that's more than 8 hours per day. Numerous times I had removed the 2080 from its slot, then reinstalled. I saw no difference.

Tonight, I uninstalled the folding client, including the DATA. Reinstalled the software, user name, and passkey. I removed the CPU slot(who doesn't?)
My 2080 is FOLDING!!

Does this mean getting a W/U for my 2080, one after another? I doubt it, w/ all the new users. I imagine there's still the queue.
I did read that there was a bunch of new W/U's added, recently. So, I just don't know. I, obviously have to keep an eye on things to see if that happens.

Thanks, Joe. What checkpoint frequency do you use? The default, or fewer to increase performance?

Checkpoint frequency of the WU, for GPU folding that is set by the researcher, not something you can change. At each GPU checkpoint a sanity check of the data is run on the CPU, and data need for the analysis of the folding is written out to be sent in when the WU finishes. Typically these are every 5% of progress, but the interval my be different depending on the project.

For CPU folding you can set the checkpoint interval between 3 and 30 minutes, I just leave it at the default of 15 minutes. Writing a checkpoint more frequently comes at the cost of a bit of performance to occasionally lose less work. Tests from using the maximum show little extra performance.

Oh, so this isn't to do w/ any GPU's. Do you bother to have your CPU folding? I don't, b/c I don't get much credit(points) for having my CPU cores involved in folding, which is disappointing considering they're no slouch in the processing dept. I run a 6th gen i5 on my main PC, and don't get much points for the power consumption. PPW is important to me. That's why I'm thinking of retiring my 970 for something more current.

As my home machines run OS X, CPU folding is what I can do. One machine is a Hackintosh, I sometimes boot that up into Ubuntu and let the GTX 1060 have a go at folding for a bit.
