Only Using 44% GPU

Post by KaiChong_Wong »

I've folded since yesterday and for a GPU only workload, it's using only 44% GPU which is strange because it it uses more load it'd be more efficient. I've set it to full.

I'm using an RTX2060 Super, with Intel i3-8100.

Is there a setting I should tweak for it to work fully, or is it a limitation because my GPU is not exactly supported?

Hope to hear from you and thank you for your help! :)

Stay safe!

I think you will find if you use something OTHER than windows task manager, parts of your GPU are, indeed, being maxed out. For instance, your memory and frame buffer and video engine will be not maxed at all, but the GPU will be. Windows task manager will average this and give you something like 40-50% even though the GPU itself is 100% utilized. Perhaps use a different tool like CPUID or something to get a more discrete breakdown of your GPU's actual workload, cheers!

If your GPU is folding, it is supported. There occasionally have been issues with the drivers for very recently released cards not being quite yet fully optimized by nVidia in this case, or AMD for their cards.

But in this case as the other reply has said it is a limitation of the default Task Manager settings. For a nVidia card you need to be looking at Compute and under that CUDA.

Hi,
Just to support the above replies, assuming the 44% figure you are quoting is taken from Windows Task Manager (set to show ‘More details’) I agree it is likely that the Cuda capability of your Graphics card is being fully utilised.

To confirm this using Task Manager, switch to the Task Manager -> Performance tab (second tab). The left-hand-side of this pane lists hardware (CPU, Memory, Disk 0,1 etc, Ethernet and or WiFi, and GPU 0,1 etc), Selecting any of these items, by clicking on it, causes a set of performance charts relating to that item of hardware to display in the right-hand-side of the pane.

If you have more than one GPU listed on the left-hand-side of the pane, click on the one that relates to your RTX 2060. The set of charts displayed does not include the Compute or Cuda charts by default – the first four charts shown are ‘3D’ which on my PC is showing 1%, ‘Copy’ which is on my PC is showing between 43% and 48%, and ‘Video Encode’ and ‘Video Decode’ both 0%. If you click on any chart title (such as ‘Video Encode’) a list will pop-up allowing you to substitute a different chart including ‘Compute_0’, ‘Cuda‘ and ‘Compute_1’. Select Cuda from that list to see the Cuda Utilisation.

On my set-up (Windows 10 Home), ‘Compute_0’ and ‘Compute_1’ currently report 0% with Cuda at 99%-100%. I believe that Cuda is a recent addition to the chart options and that prior to this ‘Compute_0’ reported the highest level of utilisation.

How do I favourite your replies? I've never received such a comprehensive reply ever! And yes I was using Task Manager, and sorry for not mentioning it as I did not think Task Manager was different to the others. Thanks for your update! I hope other users who search on this title will benefit from your replies too.

Thanks again!

My favorite GPU measurement toll is the Sensor screen in GPU-Z. It can show you which sub systems are busy and which are not.
