Setup Default with cpu 11 and Full Folding Power using 14%

Post by jkw4338 »

I have used the default settings and it grabbed 11 threads on my machine and I have the folding power set to full yet its only using about 14 % of my machine. Is there more I need to do to get it to use more?

We do not know much about your PC, so I is hard to guess.
Lets try some stuff.
You can send us the first 200 lines of your log, that will tell us a great deal about your PC.
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036

Sometimes folks are folding on a graphics card yet using Task Manager to see how busy their PC is, and it only shows CPU use. I use GPU-Z to see more accurate graphics use
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
a tab called sensors shows a great deal of detail

A one time bug exist, no matter how many threads your PC has, F@H uses just one for the first Work Unit, by the second successful Work Unit it know how many threads to use to get the best speed.

if you had 8 threads but are only using one, that is 12.5%

My GPU seems to be going well, its just the CPU is not using much.

Hardware configuration: FX8320e (6 cores enabled) @ stock,
- 16GB DDR3,
- Zotac GTX 1050Ti @ Stock.
- Gigabyte GTX 970 @ Stock
Debian 9.

Running GPU since it came out, CPU since client version 3.
Folding since Folding began (~2000) and ran Genome@Home for a while too.
Ran Seti@Home prior to that.

Its normal if you are GPU folding. The graphics card only uses cpu time for sending information back and forth to the GPU. The GPU does all the hard work, hence why it runs at 100%.

I would leave it at that as you are already maxing out folding capability. Adding a cpu slot wouldnt gain that much since you generally need a core to feed the GPU and that leaves 5 cores left on your system. If you do want to run cpu client, then setup a new slot (in FAHControl) with type cpu and assign 4 cores to it. That would then give you a cpu client running as well. But be aware the system may become unusable for general tasks due to lag and otehr annoyances. Running cpu and gpu is something that you might do more on a dedicated folding machine that does nothing else.

15:24:02:WU07:FS00:0xa7: Args: -dir 07 -suffix 01 -version 705 -lifeline 13540 -checkpoint 15 -np
15:24:02:WU07:FS00:0xa7: 1
In this line it thinks you have 1 processor -np 1

15:24:02:WU07:FS00:0xa7:Calling: mdrun -s frame1.tpr -o frame1.trr -cpi state.cpt -cpt 15 -nt 1

In this line I can see you using 1 thread -nt 1

So lets try to change that.

In the task Bar on the lower Right should be a F@H molecule Icon (You may have to click an Up Arrow ^ to see it) Click the Icon.
You should see a menu, item two should be Advanced Control, click that
To the left of this screen should be a Configure button, click this
Now you should see a Slots tab, click that
In a white box should be a cpu line and a gpu line, click on cpu. Now click Edit

By default, this should be set to -1, which lets the software decide, but we can set it to 9.
The software will only use more CPUs when it starts a new Work Unit. (as you saw in those lines which I showed you, they are at the start of a new CPU WU)

Now the next WU will use 9 cpus. The GPU slot will use one CPU, and you have some room to run Windows and web surf.

Ok I will set it and see what it does, that makes sense its only using one thread.

Interesting, if I set it to 9 I got one thread, If I set it to 8 I got one thread, when I set it to 6 I get 6 threads. Its at least using 60% cpu of my machine and thats good for me.
