Temporary server outages
"out of WU's" , it a good "problem" because it means there is many participants !
To all the participants, be patients and don't stop your clients ! Science needs us!

Idle GPUs is not a good problem.6rill2000 wrote:"out of WU's" , it a good "problem" because it means there is many participants !

I recommend keeping them busy doing something other than Folding@home, like BOINC, until Folding@home becomes more stable.
Re: Temporary server outages
That sounds like a good idea, but we're not in control of that. You're welcome to run BOINC or some other projects when you can't run FAH, but you control that.
Our servers and our staff are running at capacity. (see my recent comments in the Pande Group Announcement with the same title.)

Hi Bruce,
I couldn't find anywhere after searching many locations (web client, website, app, and finally the forums) to sign up for volunteering. I'd like to contribute. Is this possible?

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for the info. I've played around with the application a good amount now, and can help answer the basic questions.
I am actually an experienced web programmer, and I also work in dev ops. Is the link above correct?

Re: Temporary server outages
How can there ever be "too many participants"? It is more likely that you didn't scale your infrastructure well, so we're all getting SERVICE UNAVAILABLE errors, while our computers/servers waste electricity by sitting idle. Is there a statistic on the percentage of errors you encounter?
Re: Temporary server outages
I'm running tasks without folding right now, completed 1200000 of 2000000 steps, according to the live FAH log. Only started running FAH last night, so I am learning as I go, assuming that these steps are preparing my FAH client to do some folding once all the steps are completed.

Re: Temporary server outages
hi and welcome, if the log is showing that you are completing steps then you are folding. The steps are the individual bits of the work unit that you are folding. Once you have completed all the steps the wu will be sent in and the next WU sent out to be folded.gorgo2005 wrote:I'm running tasks without folding right now, completed 1200000 of 2000000 steps, according to the live FAH log. Got it, thanks!
Re: Temporary server outages
Thanks to everyone at Folding@home!
By the way... I installed the client for fun on my Macbook (1,7GHz, 2C/4T, Turboboost disabled) and I managed to get one or two working units... Does my computer limit the amount of WU I might get?

For many years, I only occasionally helped as a patient gentleman named 7im did a phenomenal job here.codecaine wrote:I couldn't find anywhere after searching many locations (web client, website, app, and finally the forums) to sign up for volunteering. I'd like to contribute. Is this possible?

7im died in the saddle and it was some days after it was discovered he had passed before I felt the urge to try and emulate his example. There has been no administrative attempt to make me stop 'helping'.

Re: Temporary server outages
The only limitation will be that using OS X you will only get CPU projects. GPU folding is not supported on OS X.Bowi wrote:Thanks to everyone at Folding@home!
