Unable to get Nvidia 1050 TI [Mobile] running

Post by dannydee83 »

I've got an Nvidia GeForce 1050 TI [Mobile] and I'm unable to get it to fold. It just sets at ready, my folding power is set to full and this is a clean install of F@H. Log below:

Welcome to the folding@home community support forum.

Your title identifies your GPU as a 1080 ti but your log reports a 1050 ti.

Please post the System Info & Config sections of your log.

Did you install the drivers from www.nvidia.com/drivers ?

Lets assume you have a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile like the software thinks.
Lets assume you have some 64 bit version of windows as the path hints: cores/cores.foldingathome.org/v7/win/64bit/Core_22.fah/FahCore_22.exe
lets further assume Windows 10 in English for no reason at all, because you omitted the part of the log that tells us this stuff so we don't have to assume.

Another possible assumption, if this is installed in a laptop, many are set to use integrated graphics for low power usage and switch to the discrete graphics card when more power is needed for games, etc. Laptops like this have been problematic in getting folding up and running.

Basically the OS or hardware switches the discrete graphics off, and folding can neither see it or use it and can not fold on the integrated graphics, especially if that is from Intel. People who have gotten folding to work on such laptops have had to either disable the integrated graphics or get the settings right so only the other graphics stays active all of the time.

Joe_H he omitted that part of the log, so we are just guessing. Yours is a good guess, if it was crashing.

As requested, here's the system info, not too sure where the config log is. I've gone ahead and updated my drivers to no avail as well as restarted my computer.

That CPU does have integrated graphics (Intel® HD Graphics 630) so Joe_H's theory has merit.

Final update, after some tinkering with the gpu-index settings and a few restarts I got it to run on the GPU, not the integrated graphics. However, I noticed that whenever the GPU folding was running my laptop battery couldn't keep a charge plugged in, I'm chalking it up to too big of a power draw so I guess my CPU will have to do for now :/
Thanks for the help!
EDIT:
For those curious, at full capacity the nvidia GeForce 1050ti draws 75W and the Intel i7-7700HQ draws 45W, totaling to 120W.
My laptop has a 120W supply so, the cpu & gpu alone hog up a lot of power, which is probably why it couldn’t hold a charge!

If you have to decide between Intel CPU or Nvidia GPU then choose the Nvidia GPU because it gets more PPD per watt. You can disable the FAH CPU slot and only run the FAH GPU slot. And you can limit the power usage of the Nvidia GPU using MSI Afterburner too if necessary.

You have identified the problem of having a system that was designed to draw more power than your power supply can provide. Unfortunately that's not a good idea if you're going to attempt to run continuously at full power. (FAH did not create that system design.) Either have to limit the power going to your GTX 1050 Ti Mobile or your CPU. You can choose how you do that but it's a semi-delicate process that can't be done automatically.

Foldy has suggested methods of managing your GPU power draw. I'll add to that the fact that you can limit the number of CPU threads allocated to CPU folding. It's a straightforward setting in FAHControl. For your 8 threads plus the GTX 1050 Ti M, the defalt is going to be reduced to 6 threads but you can choose any number between 1 and 6 rather than leaving the "-1" setting (letting the software decide).
