AMD R5 220 Stuck in "Ready" mode, waiting for WS Assignment

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

AMD R5 220 Stuck in "Ready" mode, waiting for WS Assignment

Post by mjallemand »

Hey Folding@Home folks. Coming back from a long F@H retirement and I'm installing F@H on all my work computers. Everything seems to be working well with the exception of one which is having issues with folding on the GPU.

CPU folding seems to be working fine, and the GPU reads "Ready", but it can never seem to get a WS Assignment. What's even more bizarre is that the Work Server seems to be set to a local address.

Running the newest version of Windows 10 with the latest drivers downloaded directly from AMD. Any thoughts on remedying this issue?

Thanks.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Unfortunately the R5 220 is based on too old of GPU chip from AMD to fold current projects. The Terascale 2 chip does not support double precision calculations, and current GPU projects are requiring mixed precision. Most calculations are done in single precision, but some critical ones use double to maintain enough accuracy.

Unfortunately when the card was whitelisted a few years ago, it was based on which series of cards AMD released it in. We are having to go back and identify those AMD cards that are not capable of being used and updating the GPUs'txt file accordingly.

Well dang, I was afraid of that. I have an even older NVidia GPU that's likely not compatible either. I'll just go ahead and remove those slots and let the CPU do its thing.

While I'm here, does anyone know of any similar distributed computing projects I can put the GPU towards? No sense letting it go to waste.

Which nVidia card? They didn't reuse chips from older series as much as AMD, so things are a bit easier to tell as to which will work. Pretty much anything but the lowest end cards based on their Kepler or later chips will work.

No, that's definitely too old. The 9500 GT was based on Tesla, that's two generations o0lder than Kepler.

Yep that is too old, alright. It is based on the Tesla Micro Architecture. F@H needs at least Kepler.

Thanks guys. Know of any other distributed computing efforts I can put those towards in the meantime?

Is there a comprehensive list of compatible GPUs? I'm willing to browse some secondhand listings on eBay if I can give some of my old computers a bit of a boost.

FAH downloads the list of compatible GPUs. It's in the (hidden) FAH data directory on your computer ... known as gpus.txt. Unfortunately for Windows users, it has the Linux end-of-line characters.

Just a heads up. gpus.txt is both a whitelist and a blacklist. if it has 0:0 it is black listed.

:1:m: is for AMD
:2:n: is for nVidia.

For nVida, if n<=4, it's effectively blacklisted and if n>=5 it's good to go.
