Linux Mint 19.3 and RX 550 - GPU not detected

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Linux Mint 19.3 and RX 550 - GPU not detected

Post by WhataburgerSr »

Hello everyone,

I have a computer running Linux Mint 19.3 and an AMD RX550. The latest driver is installed from AMD's website and the computer detects the card without any problems. When I have installed FAH, it does not detect the card. When I go into configure, slots, and try to add the gpu and hit save, there is no error and it is not added. I used to run Windows 10 on it and it worked flawlessly. When the old drive died a few months ago, I replaced it with a new drive and Linux Mint and everything else works flawlessly. The cpu portion is working great but I would like to contribute more than 800ish points per day if I can. Is there anything else I should try to resolve this?

Please post FAH's log. (See below in my signature block.)

This is most likely a driver problem. Is the OpenCL driver installed?

Here is the log. It looks like OpenCL is not detected. I tried reinstalling the driver with the same notice. Is there a way to install OpenCL by itself?

Personally, I don't happen to use AMD-Graphics. I searched for a while on Ask Ubuntu and found a number of unanswered questions. Next, I'd look at https://www.khronos.org/opencl/ since they're the developer of OpenCL.

At least we know what the problem is.

No! Khronos only specifies APIs. For OpenCL library for linux mint you need to install its package

Code: Select all

sudo apt install ocl-icd-opencl-dev

Hi foldy,

I was hoping that would work but no luck. I even found an old post for Ubuntu 16.04 that showed how to install Mesa but no luck there either. I'm looking for other distros that install OpenCL by default and can not find one that installs it for sure. This computer is regulated to light use(surfing the internet, email, LibreOffice, some scribus work, etc) so I don't mind moving to another distro either.

what does the following command give?:

Code: Select all

sudo lspci | grep VGA
If your GPU is recognized, did you set the GPU to true?
(in Expert options, add following line:
gpu true

Just curious but did you reboot after installing ocl-icd-opencl-dev ? Sometimes that's a necessary step in order to setup the environment properly.

You might have to re-install the FAH client too but check after a reboot first.

Partial success!! :D

I reinstalled FAH client, added the gpu true in expert mode, and now it is listed and ready!

The results of lspci are
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Lexa PRO [Radeon RX 550/550X] (rev c7)
The gpu now shows ready but it has attempted 5 times and is waiting on FahCore Run. I have tried restarting the computer to see if that will help but it shows the same notice. What can I do to fix that?

Try opening a terminal and input the following:

Code: Select all

lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12
and please post the output here.

We're looking for ids ([xxxx:xxxx]) that are the same as the ones in GPUs.txt:

When you restart FAHClient, the old copy of FAH's log is replaced with a new one. Please look again. Has the following segment (near the top)

You don't set it manually. That's a misleading suggestion.

The key statement was in your quote:
GPUs: 0

There are still no OpenCL GPU recognized. Until the driver problem is resolved, FAH cannot find a supported GPU, and neither can you find one manually

Now that at least the GPU is recognized (though not working), try to install the openCL drivers again. Hope that helps.
