RX580 - is it worth folding on?
I just bought an RX580 4GB card. I normally stick with NVidia cards for folding, but my video encoding software (DivX Convertor) is accelerated by GCN GPUs, and the AMD card was priced reasonably. When I am not encoding videos, if I fold on it, what ppd should I expect with stock speeds? TDP and compute power are supposedly about 50% higher than my GTX 1060, so I am wondering whether that equates to at least 50% more ppd (or at least as high a ppd/W). I am not sure where to look for stats relating to different clients.

It should be near 340k PPD, if you fold 24/7 and use a passcode.
(Some folders are not getting the Quick Return Bonus right now, but 1/3 million PPD would be normal with the QRB)

With my RX480 a had around 300'000 PPD, so you should have a bit above with your RX580 (with passkey).

Bloody seller decided to refund my payment, claiming the card is broken. Out of 4 feedback he has on eBay, two are negative, one for cancelling a similar sale after payment had been made, giving the same reason. I missed a similar card at a similar price because I thought I had got one! Going to keep trying once I have my refund.

I'm actually testing an MSI RX 580 8 GB right now for my blog. Got it on eBay for $120. So far, after three days of testing, it is averaging about 380K PPD according to the V7 client. Measured system power consumption at the wall is about 250 Watts (this card has a 185 Watt TDP according to MSI's website). So, it's alright...if you can get one for cheap.

A slightly old thread I know, but I thought I would add that it'd be worthwhile experimenting with under volting as I was able to drop system power draw by 20w just by dropping the GPU from 1150 to 1050 mV! GPU still at 1350 MHz, currently testing it at 1025 mV.
Oh & as well as lower power usage the fan's having to work much less harder & so is quieter . More info about my rig towards the end of this thread https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/rx ... t.2541872/

I've actually been averaging a bit over 400k PPD on these SARS-CoV-2 units on my RX 480 (factory o/c to 1303MHz). AFAIK that's more productive (point- and science-wise) than any CPU, so I'd say it's definitely worth it.

I think some people here with 32 and 64 core AMD Threadrippers might disagree with you theresomata wrote:I've actually been averaging a bit over 400k PPD on these SARS-CoV-2 units on my RX 480 (factory o/c to 1303MHz). As a rough guess I think even a Ryzen 9 3950X would be doing more than 400k PPD.

On 1 of my computers I am running an RX580 and will see 460K ppd up to 600K PPD. This is the 8gb card on an AMD 2700x, but I am not folding typically folding with the CPU.
I fold..... look at my folding setups here: https://mxyzptlk.us/about/

Interesting...I really didn't think about undervolting the GPU.Assimilator1 wrote:A slightly old thread I know, but I thought I would add that it'd be worthwhile experimenting with under volting as I was able to drop system power draw by 20w just by dropping the GPU from 1150 to 1050 mV! Tweaking using MSI Afterburner, I've dropped 'power limit' down 10%.
A bit of reconfiguration needed here, but I'll get things running again in a few hours. Getting to be that time of year that temperatures are regularly exceeding 30°C during the day for the next five or six months.

Update, simply to tie up loose ends on this discussion...
As things have cooled over the last few weeks here in the Sonoran Desert, the card is much more stable and is able to easily spit out ~350k to 400k ppd. Some of my shutdowns mentioned may be attributed to my CPU, but again, hard to pinpoint.
Yesterday...biggest day, with +730k ppd.
