Re: FAULTY project:

Post by Yavanius »

I changed the title to remove the '13816' as I have more info and it appears the bug is not for that project (at least alone)...

Got an HP Envy with a GTX 1060ti that I updated the drivers via GeForce Experience and now I am have the same issues as my Asus. The old driver was late 2018 and that seems to fit about the same time period as with the Asus drivers.

Initially running, Folding bombed out. I figured maybe the system might need to be rebooted to proper initialize. On reboot, it's working fine, but then later the WUs started failing again. I was updating some other drivers through HP's own support software and rebooted. When I came back later in the morning, I could hear the fans going. Sure enough Folding was running again.

I noted before that sometimes a WU was running. This time I managed to get the log of multiple failures and then it managing to start crunching a WU. I didn't check each failure, but the first failure and the successfully running one were both the same project # (I was wondering if it was certain projects).

Here's the log:

Guess the error comes from Intel OpenCL device
OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:NA Slot:NA Compute:2.1 Driver:24.20

Can you disable the Intel OpenCL in Windows registry?

What does FAHBench find on your system?

Where (in the registry) do I disable the Intel OpenCL?

You have a link to the Bench, Bruce? I thought I had a copy but I don't find it now.

Which version of the intel OpenCL do you have? If it's an older one, this may help:

Removed entries and rebooted. No change.

FAHBench fails with the same clGetDeviceInfo (-5)

I was looking open that error earlier and one website says -5 is the OpenCL fails to allocate resources which sounds a lot like what I've been thinking. No further insight into this. I also saw a very similar issue reported back here in 2016 but the thread ends on an unclear note if it was actually resolved...

I think I will try to hunt down a driver version from late last year. If that works, something in the new series of drivers is not liked by Folding. BOINC apps don't give me any errors on any of the drivers. Maybe something is obsolete in the way Folding tries to start the GPU? This is 2 different computers I've having the issue. I don't have any more systems to test this out on.

(I am going to try 418.91 which is from Feb 13. This is the last 418 showing up. If I go back 2, that's a 417.)

418.91 didn't work. 417 seems to be working immediately after reboot. Got no way to tell if it'll keep working until this WU finishes though... There's only one other version (an earlier 418) between this one and the 418 I can test. Hoping all this doesn't flag my machine on the servers.

Does that mean you ran the utility mentioned here?

The Intel link you gave me didn't say anything about running a Util, just removing the entries from the registry. After rebooting I confirmed they were indeed gone.

The driver I just noted is the nVidia driver... 425.x is the current series.

I paused Folding to try Bench which ran fine. I restarted Folding and it start crunching again although it didn't run log enough previously to do a checkpoint.

This is on the ASUS. I haven't gone back to check on the HP because it was crunching earlier so I'm not going to interrupt it...

I know why I don't have the Intel utility. I remember how much I hated it... it doesn't work with Pale Moon and it doesn't tell you that. Doesn't say anything browsers at all... it just installs, launches your web browser and tells you failed...

So I copied it over to Firefox and checked it. Aside from needing to update the network adapter, appears the Intel graphics is current.

Update: Folding was interrupted on the HP due to the power supply being disconnected. When plugging it back in the WU died and all subsequent WUs failed. Maybe the developers have some idea why every so often a WU manages to start yet fails the rest of the time. I'll see if I can roll back the driver and then test some newer drivers.

P.S. Folding for Cancer is really important to the family now...

If the power is interrupted during the brief time a checkpoint is being written, FAH's work-files may be corrupted. This can cause FAHClient to restart the corrupted WU over and over rather than getting a new WU -- at least until the corrupted WU expires. that's a pretty rare occurrence, but maybe that happened to you.

Updating the Intel driver from v 16.1 to 18.1 might be as useful as removing the old driver. That needs to be tested.

Well, it went to standby because it went to battery, so... and given everything else... I rolled back the HP driver and it's even older than I thought it was. 399.x series. Oddly, HP doesn't provide any nVidia updates in their support utility. I'm not even sure I remember seeing anything about using the GeForce Experience to update.

As for the Intel drivers, I checked the HP support utility, the Intel utility, and DriverBooster... there was no update for the Graphics. Although I was looking at Intel stuff was installed and there was an entry for yesterday for the display driver even though I didn't see or specify any installation of Intel Graphics. Don't like stuff being installed without me knowing about it. Bad enough I get all these extra utils when I install Intel drivers. Don't need any of this crap...just the driver thank you very much...

Beyond taking the HP to the same 417 driver (stable too there), I haven't had a chance to test anymore. I'll report back in when I get to test the other 418 driver.

Rather than depending on HP to give you the latest Intel driver, I'd recommend going directly to Intel
https://registrationcenter.intel.com/en ... uctid=3207
They've been improving the driver's ability to properly deal with other versions of OpenCL.

As noted I ran a Driver Updater which didn't find anything new for Intel Graphics.

The question remains is what changed after nVidia's 417 driver that's affecting 2 different OEM machines??

December 2019 -- same message after Microsoft fall update. Solution:
1. Pause the clinet and exit. Uninstall FAHclient including data
2. Install WHQL driver from nVidia driver downloads (441 for me).
3. Install FAH client from scratch.
This procedure worked without pain. Playing around with deleting WORK directory files did not succeed at all.
