GPU stuck on READY

Hi all,

Very new to folding here, and I'm wondering why my GPU hasn't budged...

Computer Specs: Intel i58600K (3.6GHz; 6 cores) / 16 GB RAM / Gigabyte G1 Gaming (GTX1080)
Network Connection: Cable (ethernet)
Operating System: Windows 10 Home (v1809; build 17763.437)
Overclocked?: Yes; 5GHz.
Stable?: Yes.
Software: F@H desktop client v7.5.1
WU details: (???)

Have tried Light/Med/Full... CPU gets about half utilization on Light; 100% on Med or Full. GPU doesn't do anything on any of the 3 settings.

Can provide screenshot if necessary.

First guess: Have you downloaded and installed drivers for you GTX1080 from nvidia.com?

NVidia still distributes OpenCL with it's video drivers. (AMD apparently doesn't.)

I do have the required drivers installed for my GPU; just checked and they are up to date. Log file below. Thanks for the help!

Strange that the CPU is found in slot 00, and GPU in slot 02.
Slot 01 would be missing...

Sorry, I forgot to mention -- I did try deleting the GPU slot, then created a new one, which is what "02" is.

However, when I go to Configure -> Expert, I only have Extra Client Options on the left and Extra Core Options on the right. Nothing to enable/disable the GPU.

Looks like that did it! I did have the correct drivers installed previously, but I reinstalled Windows a few months back and I guess I didn't grab 'em from NV the 2nd time.

I should clarify one thing, however -- I still don't see anywhere to set GPU to "true"... I installed the drivers, removed the slot, rebooted my PC and re-added the slot. Just started working after a few seconds.

Setting "gpu to true"would be in the expert options under Configure in FAHControl. Only needed some of the time if the client software is installed on a system and does not see the GPU hardware at all during installation.

So, this was happening before, and still is -- why does my CPU still crank up to 100% on Medium? I thought it was supposed to be about 75%?

I think I do need a rear exhaust fan but until then, I'm hovering around 80-90C on Medium; meanwhile my GPU just shrugs, barely breaks a sweat. I'm afraid to leave it on Full for too long, for fear of overheating.

medium is all available CPU threads minus 1. So in your case you have 6 threads/6 cores. One thread is reserved for the GPU slot, on Medium 4 of the 5 remaining cores will be used for CPU processing. With other activity on your system you will see close to 100% CPU.

Manually setting the thread count in FAHControl's Configure will allow more definite usage of your system.

P.S. Light uses half the available cores rounded down. So for your system it started with 2 as shown in the log you posted.

Personally, I'd disable the CPU altogether from folding.
If you have a PCIe 1x slot available, with a riser, you can install a cheap, second hand GT 1030 or GTX 1050 graphics card in it, and it will fold much better than the CPU, for less power.
Even most $50 chinese graphics cards on the market nowadays are faster than a CPU.
It's just an option that's, if it's available to you, you could consider...

Also, CPU overclocking doesn't do anything to GPU folding,
As long as your CPU runs between 2-3Ghz, you're good on most modern graphics cards; and save power in the process....

Welcome to the F@H Forum SteffenCBC,

I believe that you also need to install the OpenCL package as you don't have it, indicated by this message:

16:15:38: directory

I don't know the exact command but someone who's familiar with Linux, will be able to provide the exact command if you need it
