Hardware PPD list
Help me compile a list of average PPDs, of all modern cards and their variants, or report any errors.
The aim of this list is to have some sort of idea what card gets what.
Just an estimate, based on other people's results, preferably not limited by the pcie bus speed (eg: reported pcie 1x speeds are not included).
I'll try to update it regularly.
NVidia 28nm (Older cards):
GTX 750 = 45k PPD ; 55W = 0.82 kPPD/W
GTX 970 = 220k PPD ; 120W = 1.83 kPPD/W

GT 1030 (passive cooled) = 41k PPD ; 30W = 1.367k PPD/W

Several people have constructed Google Spreadsheets containing this type of data and shared them, but I've lost the links. Maybe somebody else can point to them.

How is there such a big difference between the RTX 2080 (1,4M) and the RTX 2080 TI (2,2M)?
Doesn't make sense that the TI is nearly 60% faster?

2080 TI - 4352 shaders
2080 - 2944 shaders
That's 48% more, so assuming they run same clockspeed, TPF becomes 67.6% of its previous value.
Applying that to the bonus calc (SQRT(1/TPF)/TPF) you should be 80% higher PPD.

One recurring issue with the various lists posted and others has been that often the PPD numbers reported are peak instead of an average over a number of different projects. So the numbers are more qualitative than quantitative and mostly give you relative levels of performance.

1070Ti is around 730kPPD on windows. Depending on the project i can get 890k on a 1080, 800k on a 1070Ti and 700k on a 1070. These are all on linux and are project dependant

I find I have to take the numbers on the Overclock.net database with several tablespoons of salt (sorry I should have posted to forum link where it originated for context). And as several others have mentioned you need to look at the individual results keeping an eye on the Shader clock speeds and the project and remember that some entries are just bragging rights showing how fast a card was pushed and remained stable for just that work unit and not an indication of stable, long term production.
Unfortunately there is no indication of whether the clockspeeds obtained were using air or water cooling or how many cards were in the system or other variables that affect performance.
Nathan mentions 800kPPD for a 1070ti. My 1070ti runs an average of 900kPPD these days in a PCIe3 x16 slot running at x8 in an air cooled chassis with a RTX 2070 with a 140W Power Limit, 70% fan speed, 117MHz Shader clock offset using Ubuntu 18.04. Likewise the 2070 in the same chassis averages about 1.2MPPD.

My 1070ti is a blower cooler that is not overclocked, everyone's mileage will vary

PPD varies too much from project to project (not talking about OS dependant variations) to build such list ...

Especially since ratio of the Calculation time to the established detadline can vary by a large factor, even when looking at a single GPU. There's no doubt that the speed of completion influences the scientific value, but now that all recent projects seem to have the same deadline and the complexity of the project is not uniform, the original intent of the design of the bonus has been disrupted.toTOW wrote:PPD varies too much from project to project (not talking about OS dependant variations) to build such list ...
If I am responsible for a project, I can adjust the deadline without altering the project and that will make big changes to the bonus points.

Yeah, it's hard to get an exact number. Even my GTX 1050 runs between 100k and 150k.
Not only projects, but Linux OS vs Windows, os optimized vs not, overclocked vs not, system being solely used for folding vs also operates a browser with several tabs, emails, etc open....
Still, if I look at the performance differences between the 1080, 1080ti, and 2070, it makes most sense to get a 1080 or 2070, as the 2070 is cheaper than the 1080 ti, yet it seems to net about the same ppds, and the regular 1080 is much cheaper than the ti, and is good for someone who is into folding occasionally rather than dedicated folding.

AMD is currently not very good option for folding, but their Vega cards should soon reach 7nm as well, so they might become an option!
I just added some power consumption numbers to the list, and though averaging, it seems like the base cards, given enough cooling, can be overclocked more (higher percentage) than the higher end cards, though their efficiency won't ever be as high.
The bigger the graphics card, the greater the efficiency.
Also, CPU folding, my CPU is a 22nm CPU, which does about 1k PPD/W.
So if your CPU tops that, you have a good CPU; but probably nothing to what these graphics cards can offer in terms of PPD/Watt.
One of the reasons why PPD/Watt increases so much, is because of Bonus points.
Without bonus points, it's likely, that each card will have round about the same amount of PPD/Watt.
Also, the RTX 2080 ti beats the Titan V by a small margin, and also costs about half to 1/3rd the price!
