Q6600 vs FirePro w2100

Post by royaleagle »

Hi there, I have been folding seen a while but only on some cheap computer. That's not a problem I know.

I didn't touch any of the configuration but I'm really curious about which one is the best ? CPU or GPU when you ( I ) have a crappy gpu.
Mine is a AMD FirePro W2100 : gpuz link :

Code: Select all

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/details/uen77
And my processor is based on lga775, it is the Q6600 overclocked to 3ghz.
I would love your recommendation for any configuration and mainly for the choice between a crappy processor or crappy gpu ?

Thanks !

If you load the latest driver from AMD and then do a default install, it should find the AMD FirePro W2100 and make a slot for it
and make a slot for 3 of the 4 CPU cores.

If you have a passkey and set your PC to Full. you should get the best folding performance.

If you need the PC to do other tasks, you may need to set the GPU to only run on idle. Usually you can run the CPU 24/7.

I did this since a while yes, I mean driver, slots, passkey.
But I run it only on my GPU because when I use the CPU to fold it gets to loud...

Still without the noise in question, which of the two will be more powerful for F@H ?
Thanks for your advice !

Power consumption :
Q6600: 105 W
W2100: 26 W

I get around 8000 PPD with only the GPU

"noisy" probably means the fans are working harder when FAH is running to push the heat out of the case than when FAH is not running. Before you select GPU or CPU or both, spend a little time checking the effectivity of your cooling. Most of the time you'll find two to four fans: The Case fan, the CPU fan, the GPU fan, the power supply fan. Fans which have been running for a number of years often develop bearing problems. If you can determine which one is making the most noise, consider replacing it ... and be sure to clean the accumulated dust out of the radiator/heatsink passages. If that solves the noise problem, it'll be worth the effort.

I have one fan in take that is also used for the CPU and one exhaust for the PSU and the one on the GPU.
My system is clean and without dust.
I think 105W for the CPU (not overclocked) is quite a bit knowing that the GPU can do as much and maybe more work.

And I like having a pretty silent PC because it is near my bed.

By the way my GPU when folding is at 100% of usage and 58 °C. That's not bad I think.

I have a other concern, my PPD changes depending on the different project. What is the cause ?

ppd depends on a lot of factors have you set a pasword or not. Another cause of changes in your ppd are for example : when you get a wu they can be based on diffrent codes (0xa7 or 0xa4 ...) 0xa7 is more optimized and so you will get more points because your cpu will do more work in less time because off the code and because wus can be based on diffrent codes you see a big chanche is ppd somtimes hope this answers your question

Not much of a ppd increase for a Q6600 on 0xa7, as it has no support for AVX. IIRC ppd for my q6600 was around 5k

So actually it's my fault I'm just not patient enough. At the beginning it was a 2500 and now it's at 8700 so that's all good thanks.
But I think I was clear only my GPU is working only the amd w2100.

What about the codes what are they ? I can see FahCore is 0x21 right now.
Oh and I have a TPF of 43 min... that's bad isn't it ?

I overclocked my GPU from 680 at the core to 885mhz, for the memory 900 to 1000mhz.
I did stress test and there is no problem what so ever, don't you think I should be happy ?

Core_21 is the most recently released folding core for GPU's. The GPU WU's tend to be large, so a TPF of 43 min is okay as long as your GPU can complete the work within the deadlines set for the projects. However your FirePro W2100 is fairly low end, approximately equivalent to a Radeon R7 240, so may not be fast enough for some current GPU projects, or will require being run 24 hours to do so within deadlines.

Overclocking the GPU memory will not speed up GPU folding much, and will contribute to extra heat generation. So returning that to the stock value may help keep your GPU cooled better.

It does take completion of a few percent for the points estimates made by the folding client to become relatively accurate. However they are based on whether or not a passkey has been entered and the estimates with a passkey assume the passkey has been qualified by processing 10 WU's using the same username and passkey.

I really enjoy all those things thanks a lot ! Actually when I start a project I leave my PC on and I will shut it off when it's finished.
It is also equivalent to a GT 730 I think.

Well the last project I've done had a PPD of 8000 and now it's at 13600 but I think that's because a loger project, the other one was less than 24h. Is what I'm saying stupid ?
And temperature are really not bad, when overclocked I'm at 58°C on stock it is 52°C.

I have a passkey and I completed 483 WU's so I think that's not the problem but more like you said the fact that I have to wait to see a acurate PPD number.

Why on earth can I play League of Legends while folding at 100% on CPU and GPU ? Does my game has a higher priority so F@H kind of put it self on pause ?

The designers of FAH have always attempted to put FAH at the lowest possible priority. When you're using the computer, the foreground applications SHOULD take priority and when you're not using it, priority doesn't matter.

League of Legends should slow down FAH, not the other way around.

Well that's great ! It works perfectly, most of my work uses the CPU (except gaming) so putting the GPU at full on F@H is not a problem at all :)

Do you have any idea where I could find the maximum temperature of my GPU : AMD FirePro W2100, I can't find it...

Why is my gpu at 98% and not 100% ?

Load can vary by project plus even though the computations are being performed on the GPU there are times when data is being moved back and forth between the GPU and the CPU.
