Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
@bruce: valid observation and most likely exactly planned this way by the maker companies.
Improved power efficiencies is a good reason for me in case of 24/7 folding.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
Yes, exactly. Thank you for reiterating that idea so succinctly.mdk777 wrote:Yeah, I think the point 7IM was making regards the cost benefit of REPLACING existing cards.
Saving around 100 watts will save you around $100 per year when running continuously, at average electricity costs in the US.
Hence, if you already have a 980TI, investing in a new 1070 will require nearly 4 years to "pay for itself" in efficiency savings alone.
Of course, YMMV. Your electricity costs may be higher, you may be paying cooling, which effectively doubles the rate of payback, you may like the lower fan noise and less heat in your living conditions...etc. etc. etc.
However, everyone will have to look at these factors for themselves, it is just not a clear cut and dry, black and white choice.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
It depends on how your upgrade cycle works, I'm going to do both and upgrade and replacement. My daily rig which doesn't fold is going to get my 980ti to replace my old 670 and the 980ti will be replaced by either a 1070/1080 so its a double win, more power efficiency on the folding rig and a better gaming experience in my daily driver

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
For me it is the other way round, my brother is waiting for AMD Vega or GTX 1080 TI before replacing his gtx 980ti. But then I get his 980ti and replace my R9 280.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
Hello,
So I don't currently Fold (I use BOINC) but came across the FAHBench and ran it on stock settings on my OC'd 1080 MSI Gaming X. I got 124.693 as my score. I also ran the stock FAHBench settings but on double and got a measly 12 points. Hope this info helps

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
Most applications (including FAH and BOINC and most other DC projects) use Double Precision only when really necessary. FAHBench does test DP for the sake of completeness.Genotype_Jim wrote:I ...came across the FAHBench and ran it on stock settings on my OC'd 1080 MSI Gaming X. I got 124.693 as my score. We used to say that FAH doesn't use DP, but that's no longer an absolute statement. FAH does uses it a (very) little.
CPUs all provide Double Precision operations. Some GPUs do and some do not. An important distinction between commercial grade GPUs and consumer grade GPUs is that those consumer grade GPUs that do support DP are pretty slow, although DP is always slower that Single Precision.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
GTX 1060 will be released this month and has equal performance as gtx 980 but half the watts for 250 dollar.
It is an alternative to AMD RX 480 in this price level.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
Before pascal they were I think $400-500. 970 around $300 with 980Ti at $600. So if the same performance (we'll see) at less W for less $ seems pretty good.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
I'm folding with one GTX 980Ti and one 1070 under CentOS 7 in one system , driver 367.27. No issues.
Be aware that Linux has no good overclocking tools. Never went into it deeper; but if important for you then Linux is not your choice.
My both MSI cards are factory overclocked; netting in around 1.4m PPD, depend on luck and WU assigned.
Personally I prefer it anytime over Windows.

Managing clockspeed & fan speed using NVidia's X server settings work well enough for me. I believe it also allows voltage changes, I just haven't used it. Does it not work for Pascal?ChristianVirtual wrote:Be aware that Linux has no good overclocking tools. Never went into it deeper; but if important for you then Linux is not your choice.

agree, fan speed is ok and works well under Linux.k1wi wrote:Managing clockspeed & fan speed using NVidia's X server settings work well enough for me. clock speed for P2 never worked for me on Maxwells despite all kind of cool bits combinations. Not tried on Pascal as that one is already on speed.

GTX 1060 got released and may have half the GTX 1080 performance at maybe only 125 Watt for 250$.

Re: Nvidia Pascal GPU cards???
Today the 1060 has been officially released as soon as any one gets there hands on one an update on what there perfomance is like ie ppd and the power draw using f@h would be great to see sompared to a 970/980. =)
