I have an 8-core (16 thread) CPU. Should I be running two slots with 4 cores each? How would I do that?

klasseng,

You open the advanced client control and select the configure tab. This opens a window that has a slot tab on it. Select this slot tab. you should see the CPU slot and a GPU slot if you are running a GPU. At the bottom is a button for 'Add". Click the 'Add' button.

Now another window will open with a default selection for 'CPU' and the number of threads set to the default '-1'. Click the 'OK' button. Now this window will close, and you will see that you added a second slot for the CPU. Click the 'Add' button again and 'OK' button again. Now you will have three CPU slots. Click 'Add' and 'OK' a third time. Now you will four slots for your CPU. Click 'save' to complete the change. Each slot of the CPU will be 1/4 of your cores.

If want to change the default '-1' to '4', you can, but it seems to automatically divide your cores equally with the default anyways.

No, you should get plenty of work with CPU:16, if you don't you could also try cpu:12 and cpu4. Not sure which would give better PPD on your machine, 12+4 or 8+8

They'll get less QRB with splitting threads across multiple WUs.

Now, 18 hrs later, was still not getting WU's.

Added a CPU slot, now running 8 threads each, picked up two fresh WU's

Yes, and 12 will work with these projects too, but no more.

Are there plans to get WU's for 16 core CPU's again?

I was getting WU's from 171.67.108.45 (seems to be MIA) and 171.67.108.204 (still no WU's).

WU's running on current 2 X 4 cores/8 threads configuration is resulting in about a 40% reduction in PPD. :( :( :(

I'm not sure if we will see any more large SMP WU, Kasson has been the prime provider of large WU but he has been silent for a few months now....

You could try a post on either the F@H reddit or slack pages.

These are assignment servers, they don't distribute any WU.

This is the job of the work servers, so you'll have to find where the last WU you got was from ...

Projects from Kasson are Linux only, and for 24+ cores machines ... so he is not the solution here.

You'll have to wait until this situation clears out : viewtopic.php?p=282329#p282329

One of the Work Servers with the greatest number of CPU projects and WU's is down and in the midst of being replaced and its projects migrated to the new server. So more WU's that can run on a CPU setting of 7 should be available in the relatively near future. In the meantime, changing the CPU setting to 6 instead of the default of 7 will improve your ability to get CPU WU's assigned from the remaining WS's.

I was going to wait for more projects to be released but I haven't been able to get any WU's for a few days now. How do you change the "CPU setting"? The configuration page doesn't show any flag to do that.

It is not a flag that you set, but a number in the folding slot configuration pane of FAHClient. By default the setting is -1 which allows the client to automatically set the number in response to the slider settings. Changing -1 to a specific number will cause the client to use that number of cores all of the time for CPU folding slots. See Figure 5 on the Configuration Guide - http://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/ ... de/#ntoc10.

OK thanks that worked. Now all my machines are busy processing WU's. Setting the number of cores to 6 allowed me to get a WU instantly after getting none for about a week with the default -1 setting.
