GPU load 100%, but no heat.

GPU load 100%, but no heat.
Is this normal? I got a project from yesterday, core 0x17 project 10468. The ETA was 1.5 days. I run GPU-Z and it shows my GPU is at 100%. I'm drawing about 100 Watts less of power than usual. My video card heat pipe is cold (40c afterburner reading). I got 5 hours left now.
Is this normal? I always figured when you're doing calculations you make heat. But I got no heat and no power draw, but yet the clock is ticking and it seems like it's doing something.

Some projects are indeed less demanding to the hardware and draw less power/creating less heat.
Can you share a bit more information ? What GPU for example ... maybe a cut&paste from your log file ?

I just got another GPU project, the ETA is 7 days! Still no heat. The GPU PPD is 4974. My computer is a bit jumpy now. Something ain't right.ChristianVirtual wrote:Some projects are indeed less demanding to the hardware and draw less power/creating less heat.

Just got a CPU project, ETA 4 hours, which seems okay.
I completely powered down the computer and rebooted. Still the same thing. When I move a window around it's very jumpy.
Here's my log file.
Core i7-4790K 4GHz
Radeon R9 280
EDIT: Hmm, actually after the reboot it seems I got the heat back. I'm now drawing the normal 360Watts instead of 250. The temp is back up to 60 instead of 40. The GPU ETA changed to 19 hours, it took a while though, still said 7 days for a bit even after the reboot and it was still jumpy. The PPD is back to 131K. And the video is not jumpy anymore. Actually, the jumpy video comes and goes now.

Did you check the clock speeds? It could have fallen to 2d clocks.
Re: GPU load 100%, but no heat.
No, it's too late now to check since I've rebooted. But I'll keep that in mind if it happens again and try to pay attention to the current core and memory speeds.mmonnin wrote:Did you check the clock speeds? It could have fallen to 2d clocks.
I have been running on a little overclock of the GPU and memory. I just down clocked it a little bit just in case.

Which drivers are you using?

When a GPU seems loaded but progresses slowly, it is usually the sign that drivers have reset, and that it didn't got well. UI slowdowns often appear after such reset.
If you look at your System Event log, you'll probably find some entries about a driver reset ...

Hmm, no driver reset logs in the EV. Nothing in the log around the 7th to explain the issue. Moving windows still jumps even after that reset and lowering the overclock.toTOW wrote:When a GPU seems loaded but progresses slowly, it is usually the sign that drivers have reset, and that it didn't got well. I'm using driver version 14.501.1003.0 "2014.1120.2123.38423" (11/20/14). I'll update the driver for good measure anyway.
I hope the packet it uploaded after 1.5 days of processing with no heat wasn't corrupt.

If you did a little overclock on the GPU, have you checked with Furmark that it is stable?
Re: GPU load 100%, but no heat.
No, not yet. I've been folding on and off since October like that.foldy wrote:If you did a little overclock on the GPU, have you checked with Furmark that it is stable?
Core 980->1040 & Memory 1300->1396. Now it's at 1033/1391.

If you want to test the limits of the GPU I would recommend to first increase the Memory clock by 25 steps and leave Core at stock.
Then check with Furmark for 15 min if it makes problems like freeze, driver crash or weird image.
If you found your max memory clock e.g. 1425 then back off 25 to be save, so in my example final memory clock is 1400.
Then you do the same thing with GPU clock.
If you found your final settings then you run a final 1 hour Furmark to deep check the final settings.
If problems back off 25 again and repeat.
After that your GPU is Furmark stable.
But it still could give problems in folding@home, in this case do not overclock.

Increasing the memory speed on the GPU does little to increase the speed for folding. It actually lowers the total overclock stability of the cores.
