YAY I'm folding... or i thought i was....

Post by Urbanfreestyle »

Hi everyone,

Finsally joined up to F@H and am running the latest version of the f@h client. 4.4 i think, and i have just changed over to an Asus 6970 DCII and for a while i was getting a failed message on the GPU WUs, I have uninstalled and re-installed my GPU drivers and now i'm folding on it... i think....

In the web control all the information says 0 (0,0,0) work unit, 0.00secs, 0 estimated points but it does show 31% and have the green spinning circle thing.
the CPU one just says ready

In the advanced viewer it shows a lot of unknowns for the cpu and for the gpu it shows my ETA, est credit etc all correctly.

One final issue i am having is that the GPU doesnt seem to be working anywhere near hard enough. In AMD Catalyst Control Center it shows only 4% activity at the most and is running at the base clocks (Minimum)

Anyone here think they can help me?

Welcome to the folding support forum.

More information would be needed to see exactly what your client is doing. Directions for posting an extract from your log file can be found here - viewtopic.php?f=61&t=26036.

Also to help you understand what you are seeing, I will just mention some of the defaults. Further information on installing and configuring the client can be found on The Software link at the top of the forum page - http://folding.stanford.edu/home/the-software/.

First, by default the client is set to not use all of your computer's CPU resources and to only do GPU folding when your system is Idle. For the CPU the default is rto use one less core than is available on a desktop, and half the available cores on a laptop. An additional core is reserved to handle the CPU computing and data transfers involved with the GPU folding.

That can lead to just a single CPU core left for CPU folding, and WU's for that setting are sometimes in short supply. Hence the apparent non-folding for that slot.

The GPU only folding when idle is probably why you are seeing low usage when you check. You can move the power slider to Full and then see if GPU folding is actively running. At that setting it does not wait for the system to be idle. Some people find that is okay for them, and others run into some jerkiness in screen responses to things like mouse movements, etc.

Thanks for the reply.
I saw another post on here and i have now somehow got all my WU running :-) I changed the CPU to 2 on one slot as it is a Dual Core Intel G3258 (oc to 4.2ghz)
I had the slider running on Full and still was only showing 4% or 0% :-/ I uninstalled and reinstalled f@h client and it started running again but this time at 99% at max clock scores :-)
That said it is still going to take about 14 hrs for it to complete :-(
I've tried clocking the GPU but it doesn't seem to have reduced the folding time.
