Overclock not translating into actual PPD

Hi all,

I've been running F@H on my Nvidia GTX 960 under Linux for a couple of weeks now, after ironing out a few problems getting it working nicely I decided to overclock the GPU a bit to squeeze out some extra points. The PPD counter on the client responded with a very healthy increase from around 160k to over 190k however the actual PPD I'm getting seems to be closer to the original figure (if not below it) now that it's been running for a few days. Can anyone suggest a reason for this? Have I missed something maybe? System details and log are below:

Nvidia GTX 960, GPU core clocked @ 1533Mhz (no memory overclock), temps between 57C and 60C

The OC isn't quite (FAH) stable and you end up losing some of the work, perhaps entire WUs?

Ah nuts, I didn't think anything of those entries as the percentage complete log increments just carried on happily regardless. All the WUs seem to be received without errors too but I'll ease the overclock back a good bit and see how it goes over the next few days. Thanks for the pointer!

PPD on the client is estimated from the rate of progress during the previous N frames (N varies but is typically "a few"). When a WU finishes and uploads, the client is able to make a more accurate determination of PPD (only excluding the time to download and to upload

The client normally downloads the next WU before the curent one finishes, and that time is counted against the total time you're working on the WU, reducing your PPD. Personally, I set next-unit-percentage to 100 rather than accept the default value. That may give a slight reduction in the time the client is actually busy processing but it also reduces the time charged to each WU, thereby increasing the bonus.

GPU processing is at it's best when there's at least one free CPU per GPU to feed data to it. Loading all the CPUs with other processing does cause the GPU to wait longer for data. This depends somewhat on the speed of the GPU, the speed of the CPU, and the transfer rate of the PCIe bus.

Do check your log carefully for errors and restarts.

The points that you actually earn are accumulated after each WU finishes and there's some variation in when each WU finishes, but it should average out over the long term.

None of these have anything to do with overclocking which is an independent factor. To see the direct effect of overclocking, let the client process a few percent of a WU and note the elapsed time from the log. Change the overclock setting and measure the time for the same number of percent. Use the bonus calculator to see the differences.
