Tons or WU and Very Little Points

Post by Konan »

I am running client 7.4.4 on a system running Win 7 sp1 3.3 GHz 4gigs ram. It has the most WU by far 622 of them but only 27479 in points. I am wondering why it has so many WU and no points. It is nice to get that many work units but it makes it more fun when you can see your points go up and team advance. I included the log(I hope)
I just got the video driver updated today and got the gpu running. So before today it was just running the cpu.

Thanks in advanced. My team just busted the 6000 mark and am excited to get some more points accumulated.

Re: Tons or WU and Very Little Points

Post by bruce »

Welcome to foldingforum.org, Konan.

You've omitted a critical part of the information: namely the first couple of pages of your log. (See below.)

I see one WU that your log shows you completed (project:9009 run:972 clone:1 gen:107). It seem to have taken about 4.3 minutes per percent which works out to about 7h for the entire WU. Given that you're folding with two CPUs, that's probably not unreasonable. Using the bonus calculator that works out to a total of 986 points in 0.3 days. (All numbers are approximate.)

Points depend not only on the number of WUs that you complete, but also how quickly you return the result. According to FAH's server records, the WU was returned 1.91 Days after it was issued. Thus it earned 392 points of credit during that 1.91 days.

As you can see, anything you can do to return the results more promptly would increase the points you earn quite significantly. (I'd start with folding more hours per day.) Nevertheless, if your hardware and the way you use it precludes returning the results more promptly, rest assured that even small contributions are appreciated.

Also note that work units sizes vary considerably. Some work units are only 125 points and take less than 10 minutes to finish. Some work units are very large, take many days to finish, but are worth thousands of points. A high work unit count is not necessarily an indication of a problem.

As bruce noted, folding 24/7 is the easiest way to increase the points per work unit. The bonus for quicker returns is exponential. Return the WU in half the time and get 2x-4x the points.

That is what I was wondering if that computer was getting a lot of the small WU for some reason instead of some larger ones. I figure they must be small ones for the sheer number of WU that it has done compared to the other computers on my team. What made me curious is that I started a computer here at work that is 1GHz slower and half the ram and in it's first work unit got 5X the points this computer is averaging. I will repost a log file when I get home. I just followed the instructions on how to post it. Do not know why it would have missed the first couple of pages. I unclicked the follow, hit the copy button then pasted it into the body like the instructions said to do. Hopefully with the full log file it will shed more light on that computer. Like I said earlier I just got the gpu updated and running. I would not have thought with that not running it would change what the cpu was getting for WU. Thanks for everyone's help. I have been looking but cannot find a guide that explains what I am looking at in the log files. Is there one? I just like to know what it all means. I can make out what some of it is but not to much.
Thanks again
Joel

I'll look a the instructions. The beginning of the log shown in FAHControl may have been truncated. That can be the case unless you click Refresh.

It also happens if you have either (or both) of the Slot and Unit boxes checked. Even after a Refresh.
