Low GPU load (GPU 1-15% or idle)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Low GPU load (GPU 1-15% or idle)

Post by alicea »

I've been folding with my GPU for some hours and there's one thing I don't understand aticonfig --odgc shows 1-15% gpu load only, and cpu has much shorter estimated time then GPU... GPU is radeon 6850, CPU is 2-core athlon.
I've added all possible parameters to slot, like client-type advantage and gpu-usage 95 etc, changed the priority of fah client, but no way, the gpu utilisation is a few percents, max 15%, and the gpu often goes idle. Because of that the fah manager shows ETA 1-2 days (CPU), but 9 days (GPU).
What to do to have 90-100% gpu load? I mean the utilisation of gpu, not the percentage of the work unit.

GPU utilization should be set to 100%. CPU should be folding on only 1 CPU, or none.

What driver version? Should be latest available for your OS. Plus the OpenCL part of the driver install.

what is the parameter name? set it in slot settings?
cpu paused

the newest catalyst etc, downloaded this week, because the OS has been changed to new version.

I've changed catalysts to older version, switched cpu slot off (there's only gpu slot), set gpu-usage to 100 (or 50 or 99 testing different values).
Behaviour: cpu load about 100%, gpu load about 1%. Estimated time for gpu; 9 days.
What to do?

I'm using F@H 7.4.4 and Catalyst 14.4 drivers for my 7750s; works fine.

With GPU drivers, it is important to completely uninstall and clean out the previous drivers before re-installing, updating, or reverting. CCleaner's Registry cleaner and Driver Sweeper are often used.

You might try completely uninstalling F@H and re-installing with only the GPU slot. I have not needed to mess with any of the GPU parameters.

Do you have open-cl drivers for the CPU? It looks as though the GPU WU is running via opencl on the CPU (this is a theory, based on a couple of other reports of very poor performance of ATI GPUs). It may be that you need to set the opencl index for your GPU in FAH manually. See here

Re: can I use my old GPU / GPUs list

What about radeon 6850/6950? I'm testing both those gpus: they work but very slow, because gpu usage is about 1%. I'd like to have 90-100% load.

Your issue is not due to the age of your GPU's, the fact you are using such a low percentage of your GPU is the problem. Please follow up in your original topic, persons there are waiting on information that may help them figure out what is going wrong and help you.

[SOLVED] Re: Low GPU load (GPU 1-15% or idle)

Post by alicea »

Hello! The problem has been solved! But none of the advices found anywhere on the net were useful :(

The solution is: the opencl (catalyst) drivers should be adequate to the age of the device. Older cards need older catalysts. But older catalysts need some other changes in system (it's not possible to have catalysts 12.10 on Ubuntu 13 or 14). Luckily I had remastersysed and archived some olded versions of Ubuntus and Mints (something like 10.04, 12.04 etc) and the GPUs started folding at a glance!
