Really low PPD on GTX 770

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Really low PPD on GTX 770

Hey!

So, I've been folding for a day or so and I'm getting a really bad PPD on my Gigabyte GTX 770, only 3000 PPD, even my CPU has more than that. Any ideas what I should do to improve that score?

PS: I tried using only 2 cores and 3 cores from the CPU, but that didn't change the PPD my GPU was capable of.

What graphic drivers are you using? If you're using the latest try performing a clean install using 327.23. Your GPU slot will need to run uninterrupted for a few frames before the estimate becomes reasonable.

FYI a clean install:

Select Custom
Remove the check next to anything folding doesn't use ... e.g. PhysX, HD audio ... basically you just need the graphic drivers
Check the box next to "Perform clean install"
After the driver installation completes reboot whether it says to or not

Also, please remember the Quick Return Bonus doesn't start until you've successfully returned 10 work units and maintained an 80% success rate.

Ok, I installed 327.23 (clean install), but now the PPD is worse than before, it's 1.7k. It's been running for 15 minutes and it has completed 0.09% of the work and it's been pretty constant with no speed ups or anything.
I'm aware of the QRB, but even without that I should get more out of my 770, because at the moment it's working slower than my CPU. The GPU has managed to complete about 500 steps in 15 minutes, while the CPU does 2500 steps every 1.5 minutes, doesn't seem quite right.

The first time you run a project you need to let it run for at least 3 frames before the estimate will be even close to actual. Let it run for an hour or so and then show us the log again so we can see how long each frame is actually taking. It does appear there might be a problem but it's too soon to say for sure.

You said you performed a clean install. I edited my previous post expanding on that a bit.

You can use programs like GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision to check your GPU's usage, temperatures etc. Using one of those may help when determining what is going on.

Other areas to check:

Windows Power Options - use maximum performance profile - don't allow anything to sleep or hibernate including your display
nVidia Control Panel - Power - maximum performance
Task Manager: your cpu slot should be using ~75% and your gpu slot ~25% ... is there anything else showing excessive cpu usage?

I am currently folding just on the 5x GTX 460's for aprox. 70K PPD

The PPD estimates are not accurate till 2-3% complete. The client needs some data to base the estimate with. At .09% it won't even be close.
