2 GPUs problem

Post by senuketo »

Hi,
started folding with only 1 GPU (7970 xfx) it was ok.
When I hooked up the second GPU 280x xfx with an USB extender on an x1 pci slot
second GPU is not getting any load - checked with GPU-Z

win 8.1 64bit
catalyst 14.4
app sdk 2.9
mobo: h81 pro btc
celeron 2 cores
sata hdd WC
client 7.4.4.

The strange thing is that the front end is showing that both of the GPUs are working and advancing and havinf 9 mins TPF. But in the log only one is displayed actually working. A bit confused here. Here's a snapshot: http://s13.postimg.org/gvw3wcpgn/fold.png

Code: Select all

When showing the log, it would be useful to show the system and config portions (click refresh then scroll to the top).

Check your Windows event logs for a video driver failure. There is a common failure mode when the video driver resets where the folding consoles show progress and stops then holds at 99% but the log does not show any progress and the %GPU usage stays at 0%. If you pause the offending slot and restart it will restart at the last known checkpoint.

Searched the Event Viewer for potential display driver issues and these two seem likely.
What are your thoughts?

When you get a Driver reset ("amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered") it's an error of the same magnitude as a BSOD except it's in the GPU rather than the CPU. The word "recover" means that the GPU is ready to try again to refresh the data on the screen, but it does not mean that FAH is still folding. This commonly leads to the observation that nothing is happening with that GPU.

I would try pausing that GPU and resuming work. Does that lead to another reset or does the WU start folding successfully?

Just like BSODs, there are many possible causes for GPU Resets with few clues to lead you in the right direction, but you really do need to figure out how to avoid them.

My case is the exact same as P5-133XL described it:
There is a common failure mode when the video driver resets where the folding consoles show progress and stops then holds at 99% but the log does not show any progress and the %GPU usage stays at 0%.
Pausing and resuming the bad GPU again triggered driver reset.
Here's the log from this event:

could it be from different GPUs on a single PC (although 7970 and 280x are almost the same)
or could it be from the 3.0 USB EXTENDER I'm using at the x1 slot?
or could it be from trying to fold through the x1 pci slot?

x1 slots are known to degrade GPU performance. I had a GTX 760 in a x16 slot, which was only wired for x1 (server motherboard). It ran 10% under the PPD of all the other numbers posted here in the forum. I eventually upgraded, but the system had issues.

Anything that is a bottleneck can cause issues, especially non-standard hardware like extenders. Unfortunately, I have no way to test for that other than to move the GPU in to a full x16 slot and test it that way.

Can't say the cause but I know whatever it is has to be fixed before you will be able to successfully fold on the GPU.

driver resets are non-specific as to cause. Common causes: Bad or dying video card; OC'ing including fiddling with voltages; Excessive temperatures; Insufficient power for a PS or an individual rail; Playing games, watching YouTube, of some other GPU related activity at the same time as folding.

I would not rule out the 1x slot or the usb extender as causes but those are not common problems.
