connection was forcibly closed by the remote host...

Post by tsyokawe »

Hi. I just started yesterday, and noticed that while other members of my team had accrued points, I had not.

I finally have some small handle on looking around at the stuff...like the log.

I have found that, "An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host," SEVERAL times since I started. Is that my ISP cutting me off, or something? What can I do to stay connected to y'all?

It's been more than 24 hours, and apparently I haven't done anything. I've had folding slot failures...that's it.

What can I do to prevent the mysterious "remote host" from forcibly closing my connection?

Well. I was finally up to 25.71 percent done, and the connection was forcibly closed again.

Still though, even so. 25% is one-quarter, right? So at 20%, shouldn't one WU been recorded? 20% of 5wu = 1wu.

'tis a puzzle...

Welcome to the F@H Forum tsyokawe,

Please note that you will only obtain points once you have successfully completed the WU and the Official Stats have been updated (usually happens every hour). As 7im mentioned, posting the log file would be helpful in troubleshooting.

The V7 client consists of several important pieces: FAHClient which downloads assignments and passes them off to a FahCore for processing, and a control program (either FAHControl or WebControl) which interfaces with the human and interchanges information with the FAHClient. When you close the control program, FAHClient continues to manage the workload without any inputs from you but the communications link has been broken. The message about the connection being forcibly closed, is correct, but essentially meaningless, not any sort of an error.

I"ve been at it for more than 24 hours, and there are no points listed. The one spot claims I have 5 wu, but when I click on it, there are zero.

Everybody on my team, including someone who started AFTER I did has points. I have ZERO points. Clearly I have no WU...and how can that be after more than 24 hours...and how can that be when the one spot says I have 5 WU? I can get screen shots to prove ths if they're permitted here. dunno.

I guess I need some evidence that what my computer's doing doing is actually registering somewhere...that I don't need to uninstall and reinstall.

wow. I have no idea how to reply to a specific post. this is just sitting at the bottom of a long list...

Going by the log file, there were 5 different WU's that started on your GPU and then failed. Since they failed immediately after starting there were no points awarded. If they had gone partway to completion, some projects using Core_17 have been awarding partial credit, but most projects do not.

There have been a number of people reporting problems with doing F@H on the lower end AMD-ATI cards from the 5000 and 6000 series. You may be running into the same problem. Could you post which driver version you have installed?

As for the WU being processed on your CPU from Project 8585, it was taking a TPF of nearly an hour when being processed at a CPU setting of 2. That would take about 4 days to finish. With the CPU setting changed to 3, the TPF is about 37 minutes. So it will finish up somewhat sooner than 4 days. This is normal for some projects, not all of them can be finished in under a day.

Is this what you mean?

AMD Radeon HD 6530D

Sorry, but I am essentially clueless when it comes to computers. I am getting a new graphics card the first of March with my VA check...a Radeon 6670, I think. Will that help?

I think I understand...the WU are not awarded until the entire project is completed? So the 5 wu never happened.

Sort of, except you're not using the conventional words.

A FAH project consists of many thousands of Work Units that are distributed to various people. Each time a WU is completed, it generates a new WU so even with many people working on the same project, it takes many months to complete the project. Everybody who finishes a small piece of it gets points when they complete that small fraction of the project that we call a WU, but as you've found, it may take several days for you to complete that small piece. In other words, to get points, you have to finish one or more of the assigned Work Units.

In the case of your GPU, something is wrong, so those WUs were dumped due to some error and received no credit. That might be due to the drivers but I suggest you temporarily pause the GPU and lets be sure we get the CPU folding. Then we can decide the best course of action for the GPU.

The WU (project:8585 run:1 clone:6 gen:260) that was assigned to your CPU is progressing slower than you probably expect. It has a preferred deadline of 8.00 days and a final deadline of 13.40 days, so if you finish in in 4 days (60 minutes/frame) or 2.5 days (37 minutes/frame) you'll be fine and you should get points an hour or two after the result is uploaded.

If you are buying a new GPU with the Primary focus on folding, I would suggest that you buy the best possible GPU within your budget. If your primary objective isn't folding, then buy whatever GPU that suits your needs and folding can be configured on it later if possible.

This card is within my budget. I'm told it's a good workhorse for the money I can afford.

Since I can't connect anyway (see other thread), and since whoever I was folding for before is gone, I will go ahead and uninstall. It seems given the problems with interrupting the folding, I might as well wait until I've got the new card plugged in before I bother reinstalling the fold thing. No point in all that work going to waste again.

See y'all in a couple of weeks.

And thank you for your patience in all this.
