That could imply that the server constructed a sort of "check pointed" WU from the upload of the partially completed one, and the second donor received this and simply ran it until the end (literally- "completed" it).

However, it seems more likely that the second donor processed the whole thing from scratch, in which case I'm curious as to why partial credit was awarded.

The return of the failed work unit will cause it to be reissued as is. If there are numerous subsequent errors it is marked as bad and then the Project Leader may choose to make a modification.

The work unit was processed to 85% times the base credit of 6000 equals 5100. A partial credit (no bonus) is received for an incomplete work unit up to the point of failure if returned. The servers do not know if the 'problem' was with the work unit or there was something wrong with the folder's setup. Therefore there are some points awarded for this type of error.

The usual implication is that if a completed WU isn't returned before the expiry date then no credit is given, period. It's nice to know that there are exceptions, and that PG has a heart of gold underneath

Just to clarify partial credit, only some projects award it for WU's that are returned incomplete. It is up to the individual PG researcher whether to enable the partial credit. From my past experience this is more common with new folding cores that are still under active development and may not have become extremely stable yet. So for example you don't usually see partial credit on core A3 or A4 work.

This slot had a GTX 580 in it previously which crashed several times too. I haven't run any differential screening to see if it is a software issue or a hardware issue on the motherboard or something, but I'll post what I find when I know.
