FahCore_17.exe - Bad Image with Amd 7790

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

FahCore_17.exe - Bad Image with Amd 7790

Post by Dr_Rob »

I have been folding for many years, and have usually been able to work out folding errors, but not this time.

I have run Nvidia cards up to this point, but wanted to try out Core 17 with an AMD card. To check out the performance of an AMD 7790 I installed Fah 7.3.6 on a Win 7 32bit 4Gb E8400 machine with 13.12 drivers. It ran perfectly for 2 days producing 28000+ PPD . Due to the need for more cpu cores by the AMD card I transferred the 7790 to a Win 8.1 32bit 4Gb with a Q9550 and the 13.12 drivers again with Fah 7.3.6. On GPU startup I received FahCore_17.exe - Bad Image with additional info of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OPENGL32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try reinstalling the program..... Error status 0xc0000020. This Win 8.1 machine had been running a Nvidia 560Ti for months without problems. I deleted all drivers with machine reboots at each step of changing cards and drivers.

Here is the log of 2 GPU failures but with 13.9 drivers that have resulted in the same error

I did do the obvious of reinstalling 7.3.6 with data deletion several times. I have also tried adjusting slot values to 0 and 1 on the opencl-index and 1 on the cuda-index.

Thank you for any help.

OpenGL is not OpenCL. Core_17 needs OpenCL and shouldn't care if OpenGL is present or not.

I heard this morning that MS is doing away with Win8, to be replace by Win9. That may have nothing to do with the answer to your question, but it also might.

Did you REMOVE the GPU slot and all it's contents? It would need to download a new WU and a new FahCore to match the change in GPU characteristics.

The OpenGL part of the error was very confusing to me also, but that is the error given. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "REMOVE all it's contents". I did delete the app thru Windows checking remove data. I also removed the gpu from the slot configuration, ran cpu only for a while, then identified the gpu again - got the same error. I will delete the app, making sure all FAH folders are gone, then reinstall.

I've run folding on a Win 8.1 with no problems

My guess is that you have a driver issue.

First, consider running a driver cleaner for it may be that you have remains of an old driver that is causing problems.

Secondly, Get recent drivers from AMD/ATI and specifically not from your video card manufacturer/OEM/Microsoft. AMD/ATI supply OpenCL with the drivers but other sources that may not be the case.

Do you have a suggestion on driver cleaner, as I have never used one. There is so much malware out there.

All drivers have been from directly from AMD and Nvidia. I see Nvidia has 332 WHQL drivers out. I have been cautious of the "latest" drivers since the "Game Ready" 331 drivers must not have contained OpenGL, as they did not perform.

Thanks for the suggestions

Driver Fusion works fine for me for both AMD and Nvidia cards.
http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion
(The free version is all you need.)

But the procedure is important too:
  • Remove the AMD Catalyst Install Manager (all AMD software) from the Control Panel/Programs and Features (not from the Device Manager)
    Reboot
Run Driver Fusion to take out the remaining AMD entries
    Reboot
    Install the new drivers
It probably would be a good idea to completely uninstall FAH before removing the old drivers, and then installing it again when the new drivers are installed.

Well, I deleted all display drivers and FAH. Rebooted. Ran Driver Fusion in the safe mode deleting display drivers. Rebooted. Ran Glary Utilities to delete any files with AMD/Nvidia (including sound drivers)/Physx/OpenCL/Fah. Rebooted. Installed 13.12 drivers. Rebooted. Installed FAH and when the GPU executed I got the same /FahCore_17.exe Bad Image/ error that stated this post. And the file C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OPENGL32.dll doesn't even exist on the computer. This Win 8.1 is an in-place online XP upgrade otherwise I would wipe the HD and start completely over.

Any further suggestions ?

Here is the log again with 2 failures

Is Win8.1 fully patched (at least "important") with Windows Update?

To answer you bruce, yes updates are current. The machine is used only for folding.

Bingo, you've got two GPU's and one is unsupported. I give odds, the client is not enumerating them correctly and it is trying to run folding off the unsupported GPU.

You need to manually specify the opencl-index and the gpu-index (cuda-index is specific to Nvidia) in the GPU slot configuration (Advanced control->configure->Slots tab->double click on the GPU slot). The default is -1 which is letting the client figure it out which is not working. There is a certain amount of fiddle factor here but by first guess would be make them both 1 and second make them both 0. If neither of those don't work then you may have to go through all the possible permutations (0,1) for the gpu-index and (0,1,2) for the Open-cl index depending on the number of OpenCL devices (If you have a driver for it, your CPU can be considered an OpenCL device).

Hmmm. Yours looks a lot like the machine I'm on today.

21:08:40: GPUs: 2
21:08:40: GPU 0: UNSUPPORTED: R9600 Pro primary (Asus OEM for HP)
21:08:40: GPU 1: ATI:5 Bonaire XT [Radeon HD 7790]
21:08:40: CUDA: Not detected
21:08:40:Win32 Service: false
. . .
21:08:40: <!-- Folding Slots -->
21:08:40: <slot id='0' type='CPU'>
21:08:40: <next-unit-percentage v='100'/>
21:08:40: </slot>
21:08:40: <slot id='1' type='GPU'>
21:08:40: <next-unit-percentage v='100'/>
21:08:40: </slot>

I spent a lot of time trying to attach my monitor to the motherboard video and never figured a way to make that work so my monitor is on the same GPU that I fold with -- and I needed no manual GPU settings. (Everything is set to -1) If I plug the monitor into the R9600, the HD 7790 doesn't work. If you do figure out how to enable both video devices, let me know.

I don't believe the order of my slots matters, though I have not tried putting them back in the default order.

P5-133XL, I tried all combinations of (0,1) gpu - always on 0 the device was the R9600 Pro primary and the work server did not have an available work unit - naturally it is unsupported. I fixed gpu to 1 and then ran the open-cl index from -1 to 3, always getting the same core17 failure. I also deleted the cpu slot in case there is an OpenCL conflict, but had the same results. I'm a determined SOB but I am ready to try the 7790 in a different folding machine and put a Nvidia card back in this one. I'm still open to a suggestion though.

bruce, I have never used onboard video, but maybe I will attach 2 or 3 monitors just to see what happens. Thanks all

Have you ever tried to run http://fahbench.com/ on that GPU?

If you poke around a bit, it will tell you a lot about the OpenCL support you have and how the GPUs are enumerated. Once you've digested that information, you can use it as a benchmark program to test supportable GPUs.

(I'm not on the same computer today. Note to self: Run FAHBench on the HP and see what I learn.)

I will give it a try sometime, Win 8.1 is still intact, but I had a copy of Vista 64bit and a extra hd. After getting Vista to a workable level, I have been able to fold. It is only at 17% currently but without any problem or adjustments. Mine is not an HP machine but all individual parts. Mb is Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2Pt Rev 2.1 which has onboard video.

I have other machines with Win7 and 8 and lower preforming older Nvidia fermi cards. I would not mine upgrading to AMD cards, but hate it may not be as easy as a simple card substitution with driver change.
