Fahcore_17 folding slot hangs at 0% occasionally

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Fahcore_17 folding slot hangs at 0% occasionally

Okay, so this is a strange bug, and has only started since I moved to a R9 280x and drivers 9.2 (did both at the same time unfortunately). After a GPU work unit finishes, it will download a new unit and send the old one as normal, start the new work unit like normal, but then it doesn't actually begin the work on the GPU unit. It just reports it completed 0 out of xxxx steps (0%), and the GPU is never put under load and it hangs there until I pause and start the slot again.

It is strange that this doesn't happen every time, just on occasion, and usually during the night.

Here is the relevant part of the log, before I stop and start the work unit to get it to start again. I will include up to the point of the last successful send and new start of a gpu unit.

Ah, okay well thanks =/. Do you know if core_17 is only available through the beta flag still? Or does client-type = advanced give the same cores for the GPU now?

From your log file, it seems that you are running an older version of FahCore_17 (the older version doesn't print the version number but my guess would be 0.0.47). The latest version of FahCore_17 is Version 0.0.52. If you would like to upgrade, please set the GPU Slot to finish and once the WU is successfully uploaded, delete the FahCore_17.fah folder from this directory assuming default installation directory):

Okay, so I did update my fahcore_17 to version 0.0.52 a long while back. The 0% hanging problem persisted however, even after taking off the beta tag. I found a workaround for the problem on my new machine (that has the R9 280X) by setting the monitor to never go to sleep... I figured since it only seemed to happen during the night when the computer wasn't active, it had something to do with an idle state.

But, my old computer that I gave to my brother, still hangs just the same way. Fresh windows install and everything. This computer now has a 7870, which is why the bug is probably popping up again (it was using a 6950 up until a few days ago). Something about the different GPU architecture causes a lot less screen-lag, but also this bug. I would like to solve it a more reasonable way, as my brother often watches movies while going to sleep, and the monitor auto-turns off of course at the end.. it would be nice not to have a bright monitor burning away electricity every night.

Any help? Here is the log again, this time without the -beta flag. Starting it a while before it hangs at 0%, and then after when the CPU client continues on it's own.

There is a failure mode for Core_17 that is definitely associated with overclocking. The core stops recording to the log and creating checkpoints (very often at 0% but can occur at any frame), but still shows progressing in the Web Control and the Advanced Control until it gets to 99% and there it stays till the slot/client gets restarted.

In the short run, you can solve the problem by restarting the client or merely pausing (it takes much longer to stop than normal but it will happen eventually) and unpleasing (restarting) the problem slot. The slot will restart at the last checkpoint. In the longer run, you need to decrease the clock rate of the GPU and the lower the clock rate the less often this failure mode will happen.

Yeah, restarting the client has been how I got it to actually start to do work again. However, in the middle of the night when it finishes a unit and starts a new one, that can't be done (at least not until you are awake again to see it is not going).

The GPU is at stock clock, so I don't know why this particular issue on my system would be due to overclocking. And like I said, it also happened with my R9 280x, at stock clocks. Making it so the monitor does not turn off fixed the problem completely (never reoccurred afterwards) , which makes it seem like it is not due to the clockspeed and something to due with an idle state. It also has never failed to start a new unit again when I am actively using the computer, and it should fail just as often no matter the time if it was a clock rate...

I don't know. Thanks for your insight, I'm not dismissing what you said, I just am not sure if that is the cause of my particular issue.

Any other feedback/possible things to try are welcome :)

What version of Windows are you using on the "old computer"? Do you have all the necessary prerequisites installed?

Are your Window's Power Options set to Maximum Performance? Display set to never turn off or sleep?

Is a screensaver being used and, if so, have you tried setting it to None and just turn the monitor off when not using the computer?

Is there any indication in Window's Event Viewer that suggests the GPU may have reset?

Have you tried re-installing the latest AMD drivers?

I am running Windows 7 64-bit SP1 on the old computer. I have all of the prerqs (.NET Framework 4.5 is installed and 2008 C+++ Redist.) , the processor is a Q9650 (3.0 GHz First Gen Quad Core).

Windows Power options is maximum performance. The work around I mentioned above of having the display set to never sleep does work, but I was wondering if that was the only way. It would be nice to save on energy and I'm sure it would be nice to not have a screen shine at night when you sleep if you watched a movie to go to bed.

No screensaver is being used, and yeah the monitor is just turned off when not being used, or when not watching a movie to go to bed which unfortunately is often what is done.

I will have a look at the Windows Event Viewer tomorrow to have a look and see if it has any past recorded events.

This issue has persisted through different driver types, and the drivers had a fresh-install of beta 13.11 beta v9.5. Note that this issue still occurred when it was running on the release version of the drivers.

Another option you may want to try is set the screensaver to activate after 120-180 minutes depending on the movie's length and use the Blank screensaver. That shouldn't affect folding and should eliminate the screen shine at night.

There have been problems reported related to screensavers. Microsoft has some which use the GPU and some which disable advanced functions, effectively killing GPU folding. Turning the monitor off is not the same as the Blank screensaver and running some other screensaver may be something else again, but all fall into the same general category. Some will work and some will not. I can't give you an exact answer -- and it might also depend on which version of Windows you're running and/or which version of drivers are involved -- but it's an area for you to investigate.

Okay, so what it seems that this is a tricky area, since it is kind of specific and is only a big issue for us 24/7 folding people.

What we do know: the issue has popped up twice with two completely different systems and video cards, an a third time with a different gpu on a system that previously had the issue. It only seems to affect GPUs newer than the HD 6000 series. These three configurations caused folding to hang at 0% when the display was set to sleep after a set period of time (and the new unit began while the screen was in idle/powersave, or perhaps in idle for a period of time):

OS: Windows 7, CPU: Q9650, GPU: R9 280x
OS: Windows 7, CPU: i7 4770k, GPU: R9 280x
OS: Windows 7, CPU: Q9650, GPU: HD 7870

So, it seems like the motherboard/CPU is irrelevant, and the new GPU causes problems vs. older GPUs.

For now, the solution of just setting the screen to never sleep is a solution. I will investigate the screensaver idea; I have never used screensavers before with folding, and the screen will still draw the same power... but it might be an okay midway solution if the light is really an issue.

Could you try changing the monitor output port to a different one? The reason being that I read somewhere that there was a GPU issue and it was resolved by changing to a different output port.

Right. The black screen screensaver leaves the light on but hides it. If you're lucky, the hardware in your monitor will recognize an inactive monitor and remove the power from the light without informing the OS. Remember that this is not the same as having the OS decide to turn the monitor off ... and then conclude that the GPU can also be powered off because the monitor is now powered off.
