Joining teams

Post by billford »

I've looked in the FAQs but can't see a definitive answer to this- I've got several machines folding, hence several clients, all using the same username and passkey of course.

Is it permissible to join the different clients to different teams?

If anyone wonders why I'd want to- I can't find a team that would have my whole-hearted support, but there are a few that I have some sympathy with and who could use some help :)

You can spread out your team assignments to as many as you want ... You can also change weekly or daily ... :eugeek:

Thanks- I didn't want to do something that might inadvertently screw up my stats or put me in bad odour with the system

I doubt I'd change very often- too much work keeping track at my end

Yes, it is possible and permissible to contribute to more that one team. If you want to have one your clients contributing to a different team simply change the team number for that client using FAHControl(highlight the client in the left panel > Configure > Identity) but leave the username and passkey the same or you would have to qualify them again for bonus purposes. You can even change the team number on a per slot level by adding an extra slot option to that slot:
Name: team
Value: #####

With multiple team contributions, I am not sure how it will be handled by third party stats but for the official one, all the team contributions are listed on a single page with your username (and passkey combination if entered).

They'll probably give some odd results… but then they do anyway in some areas. My individual rank on EOC is about 200 higher than on Kakao, which is about 600 higher than on the official stats… I'm told the anomalies are partly due to different definitions of inactive users and partly because they can't separate donors with the same visible name but different passkeys (or "hidden" parts of different full usernames). Some anomalies put you higher than you should be, some put you lower.

I don't think one more oddity will make much difference

While you could change as you like I really would suggest to stay in one or two teams. Beside adding complexity for your stats it's also about team building and folding together, a bit cheering, some helping, team internal friendly competition. But that also require some longer collaboration to build a common base and relationship. Virtual reality is not different from real reality.

I take your points, but for the team aspect to work properly you really need to know the other members. That's fine if they're friends, work colleagues etc (in real life or online), a bit more problematic if they're not. Some teams have a link to some sort of discussion area where you can gain some affinity with the others, but (at least for the ones I've looked at) most don't.

Another way of looking at it is that folding has a "charitable" aspect to it, where computing power rather than cash is donated. If you have no obvious team to support for the more obvious reasons, why not contribute points to a team whose aims or viewpoints you have some sympathy with?

I certainly agree about taking a reasonably long term view, chopping and changing teams is to nobodies advantage whatever the motive.

As long as you use the same passkey, you can sum all those points easily on the Stanford page

You probably already know this because the question is asked frequently but it bears repeating for others reading the topic. Once you contribute points to team "A" they permanently belong to that team. You can't move them to team "B."

Yes, I realise that, just as you can't transfer points if you change usernames.

It's a sound principle in my opinion- you can "reward" a team by joining it, but you can't penalise it by leaving.
