First off I am very new to Linux have never used it before in my life just wanted to get some spare parts folding if I can until I buy Win7.

i5-760 2.8GHz
GTX470 on
2GB RAM
vs FAHv7.3.6
UBUNTUv 12.04.3 desktopamd64

Let me know if you need more info and I will try and find it.

I have got the CPU folding and is doing fine, but the GPU just stays in the ready status. It has: ID01 Status: Ready Discription: gpu:0:GF100 [GTX 470]
The work server is 0.0.0.0
Collection server is 0.0.0.0
Log file says: Failed to get assignment from 'assign-GPU.stanford.edu:8080': Empty work server assignment

For the GPU folding, please ensure that the following conditions are met:
1) Ensure that you are using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu
2) Install the Nvidia proprietary drivers (http://www.ubuntulinuxguide.com/install-using-gui)
3) Ensure that the client-type for the GPU Slot is configured for advanced. To set the client-type as advanced, open Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) -> Configure -> Slots Tab -> GPU -> Under the Extra slot Options, enter the following:
Name: client-type
Value: advanced

Please note that the GPU folding in Linux would require you to have 1 CPU dedicated to feed the GPU. Thus, you may have to configure your CPU Slot for 3 CPUs instead of 4. To change the CPU value, please open Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) -> Configure -> Slots Tab -> CPU -> There you can change the value from -1 (or 4) to 3 and then save it.

Thanks for the help...unfortunately I am having lockups of the mouse and keyboard when I try to use, or make changes to the OS or drivers. If I leave everything alone and let the CPU fold all is good.

The screen lag/freeze, is this what you encountered after you added the GPU Slot and it started folding on your system?
Yes -> You could configure the GPU to fold only when the system is idle so when you are using the system, you will not face any screen lag/freezes.
No -> Might be another issue on your system which we would need to troubleshoot.

Am not 100% sure how to configure the GPU for idle on Ubuntu so you would have to wait for someone with Ubuntu experience.

Welcome to foldingforum.org, Eric142.

Mouse lag/screen freeze might be a problem with the GPU drivers or might also be due to hardware issues -- including overclocking (which can be decreased from the BIOS setup). How big is your power supply -- especially the 12V portion.

Do you have another computer connected to your LAN or is this a stand-alone system?

Are you using the X-desktop exclusively or have you opened a text-based-terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1 or by some kind of a remote terminal connection?

PantherX: After changing the GPU driver to the recommended version following your link, rebooting because of a freeze (more on that in a bit), and following step 3 plus the "please note message" the GPU is folding.

bruce: Unfortunately it is not lag it is a complete freeze, of most of the input devices, the only thing I can do is hit the power button. When I do I get the message for a reboot..etc. I would think this would tell me that the computer is not locked up but just my PS/2 connected devices have?? This is a completed assumption on my part, although I have changed the keyboard, but with another windows driven one, I have no generic style.

The only hardware troubleshooting I have done is change the RAM out, but I know both sticks are good because I had them running in another system with no issues.

I am using a 620W power supply with 18 amps on the 12volt output, should be enough to run one GTX470 with one hardrive.

I have 5 other computers connected to my LAN, and a few devices.

Not sure what X-desktop is, I have only used the Gnome terminal.. I really have no idea what I am doing for the most part I just fallow directions and enter what I read. This is the first time I have used any other OS then windows, unless you count DOS, my learning curve is on the up slope.

BTW is there any way to monitor the performance in Ubuntu, simmaler to task manager in windows?

In a modern machine almost everything is now run off the 12V output which converts your 620W PS into a 12vx18A=216VA (W) PS which then powers your CPU in addition to the MB, HD, Video card, DVD player, sound card, and whatever else. That is likely not enough power to run everything. It would not surprise me at all if you would run into power issues with your video card when folding.

Try System Monitor. You can also open a terminal and type "top" without the quotes (q to quit).

I would agree with you but my power supply has 3X12V @ 18 amps. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139002) Yes it says it can do SLI but it is old. I calculate that the GPU alone, now that it is folding 100%, is taking 70% of the power. CPU..including RAM another 18% I am doing nothing else with the computer it will run hot and that is good I use it to heat the house. I am not seeing any reason that my issues come from a power problem.

Humm the video card is getting to hot and the fan is not adjusting. Is there a way I can turn up the fan RPM?

X11 is an old standard -- Gnome is the right answer to my question.

On Windows, you can open the "DOS Box" / "Command Window" and do some things even if the mouse is frozen. In Linux parlance, you can open a terminal in a window OR you can hotkey in and out of Gnome. When the mouse is frozen, what does CTRL-ALT-F1 (or -F2) do?

If you have three rails, then make sure that your video card has its own dedicated rail and is not sharing a rail with some other component.

Get yourself a OC'ing utility like EVGA Precision. You can do far more than just OC with it. One of the nice features is the ability to monitor details of your video card like temperature in the systray real-time as well as total control of your video card's fans.

Unfortunately, that only works on Windows, not Ubuntu (at least, last time I checked).

As far as I know, you could potentially change the fan speed by reading this guide (viewtopic.php?f=89&t=25075). When I folded in Ubuntu on my GTX 660 Ti, the temperature would get up to 81C and the fan was auto controlled by the drivers.
