unable to get an assignment

Welcome to the forum.

The default settings after installation will use one core of a Core 2 Duo processor. This is to reserve some processing time for interactive use and in the case of laptops some owners want to limit the heat output from full usage of the CPU. However, over the last couple months there have been shortages of WU's to process on single processor setups.

That leaves either waiting until your computer gets assigned a WU at the current settings, or changing the slider setting to Full. At Full folding will use both cores. That should get you a WU. I am getting assignments on my Core 2 Duo MacBook at that setting. Some WU's assigned may also work at the lower setting, but ones using the A3 core definitely will not work using a single core.
