Setting up client for CPU + Core 17 folding.

Post by rossalthor »

Now that core 17 is on full fah, I imagine that soon everyone will be getting more and more of them. So far I still haven't gotten anything other than the normal core 15 so it hasn't bothered me too much yet, but I figured I'd be a little more forward thinking about this before I actually get assigned a core 17. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm under the impression that with Nvidia GPUs core 17 uses a CPU core as well, so you need to set your SMP slot lower. This might be a silly question, but is that a physical core? Like, how does hyperthreading affect it? For example if I have a quadcore CPU that's hyperthreaded, do I need to set the slot to 7, or 6? Or if I had a dualcore CPU that's hyperthreaded, do I set the slot to 3, or take it down to a uniprocessor core? I hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

Not a silly question ... To my understanding a HT core is enough, for regular use. So on my i7 I run with CPU:6 when I had one GPU. I followed my "rule of thumb": one spoon for the can. Means 8 cores - 1 for GPU - 1 for OS (Linux in my case).

Until recently I had three GPU in my dedicated rig (2 GTX 780 and one 660Ti). 8 -3 - 1 = 4. With that I gave up CPU folding and left the CPU just be there for the GPU. What I saw is that the gain in PPD from the CPU was less compared to the lost in PPD from the GPUs. Now I relocated the 660Ti but didn't started CPU again. Maybe I give it another try.

What you could do is just configure CPU:-1 and let the client decide. else I would suggest CPU:6.

What GPU and driver ?

It's nothing much because I'm abroad in Japan right now so the only folding I've been able to do was just what I was able to fit into my pack. That being my laptop which has an i7-4702MQ and a GTX 760M with driver 311.30, and a little Zotac zbox with an Atom D2700 and a GT 520M with driver 331.65.

So we are folding at the same timezone/location: me too in UTC+9, Tokyo ... :)

On the a Atom I wouldn't bother CPU folding; just let it do the GPU part and look after the temps. Folding can be nasty to the HW ; good cooling is good :eugeek:
