Project 8900 WORK_QUIT (404)

I'm starting to run out of ideas as to why my Radeon 7970 doesn't seem to be able to successfully return any p8900 work units since it started folding on core_17. The units all run to completion and then appear to conk out with a WORK_QUIT (404) message right about the time they'd otherwise be uploaded. p7810/7811 have completed in the past with no issues, but p8900s are just about all it's been grabbing the past few days. A few system vitals:

Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
i5-4670K CPU
NZXT Kraken X60 cooler
Asus Z87-A motherboard (1405 BIOS)
Radeon 7970 (MSI reference design)
16GB G.Skill ARES DDR3-1600 (CL9)
Corsair 850HX PSU

I have tried the following so far:
Returned GPU to stock clocks (had been stable prior to core_17 at 1025/1400)
Had CPU Turbo Mode disabled and cores locked at 3.8 Ghz, returned to stock settings
Reduced command rate on RAM from CL1 to 2 (currently running on XMP profile 1 at 9-9-9-24)
Confirmed power slider in Folding client remains at Full
Tried Catalyst 13.9, 13.11 beta 6, currently on 13.11 beta 8 - uninstalls performed with boot into Safe Mode and cleanup with Treexy's Driver Fusion
Confirmed system power saving set to do nothing but blank monitors after 15 minutes

Temp wise, the CPU sits around 47-50C while folding, the GPU at 79-82C depending on ambient temps. Below are some log samples - first the system info block:

Hopefully I'm missing something simple here.

I don't know if it might make any difference, but all 24 of my Windows 7 machines in "The Farm" (mostly Win7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit, but also a few Win7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit) all use FAH v7.2.9. You can see "The Farm" at this link.

The reason that I have stayed with FAH v7.2.9 is, that it works exactly the way I want it to work.

I do realize (and agree), that the newest FAH version is much better for noobs and those who don't want to tinker "under the hood".

But for me, and this is my own personal opinion, v7.2.9 is the best version for the way I use FAH.

It (FAH v7.2.9) gives me some pretty decent results, in my [not-at-all-humble] opinion.

Those temperatures seem a bit high. My 7970 sits around 61C when folding. Have you tried using MSIAfterburner or other software to manually set the fan speed higher? As an experiment you could remove the computer's side panel just to see if the temperatures drop to a more reasonable level. Also, make sure there isn't a dust buildup in the 7970 that may be causing higher than normal temperatures.

Another setting you could try changing is decreasing the number of cpus from 4 to 3 for you cpu slot. Although the 7970 doesn't use a lot of cpu with the core 17 projects it does require some and decreasing the cpu slot to 3 will free up a core for the GPU to use when needed.

In "The Farm" (46 GPUs), I have no side panels installed at all, and for the 'high heat generators' (ie dual-GTX-Titan, dual-GTX-680, and dual-GTX-660-Ti systems), I have a 12-inch (30cm) fan, running at 'high speed', blowing directly on the GPUs/motherboard.

I read somewhere here (I can't find it right now, but I'm still looking) that there was a study that showed a fairly "high correlation" between GPU core temperature and FAH calculation failure rate.

In "The Farm", except during the hottest days of summer in my area (Vancouver, BC, Canada), it is very unusual to see a GPU core temperature higher than 65C (that's not a 'typo'), and any temperature higher than 70C is cause for immediate corrective action.

Since I adopted these (some might say) "low" GPU core temp values, my "FAH calculation failure rate" has dropped to zero, on the 46 GPUs in "The Farm".

In my personal experience with "The Farm" over many months, I have noticed that occasional "FAH calculation failures" start to occur, when the GPU core temps rise above 70C (for example, in the summer months when the GPU core temps rise). The higher the GPU core temp is above 70C, the more frequently I get "FAH calculation failures". These are just observations that I have made, I am not claiming that I "know" the precise cause of these "FAH calculation failures". But they do occur only when I see these "higher" GPU core temps. FWIW.

If FAH runs differently with high temperatures, it's because the GPU is making calculation errors. Many other GPU programs are tolerant of a few calculation errors; the science that FAH does is not. From what I've heard FAHBench is an ideal program for detecting errors that would make FAH fail. (Just because your GPU passes certain benchmark tests does not prove that there are no errors.) Have you tried running it?

Thanks for the tips. When I got my current case (moved from an Antec 900 to a Fractal Design Define XL R2), I did notice an increase in GPU temps, even though I'm running fans in both available front intake positions same as before (not sure where the stock Fractal Design fans rank in terms of performance). The case will accomodate a bottom intake as well, which looks like it would blow almost directly up at the video card, so I might try that if a simple cleaning and fan speed tweak doesn't take care of things. I already have MSI Afterburner installed, and noted that the fan speed was hovering in the low-40% range. I tweaked it up to 55%, and the core temp as reported by Open Hardware Monitor has dropped from 78-79C to 67C. I also stopped the process and deleted the core to force a new download; the current WU (p8900 (124, 0, 202)) has about 3.5 hours remaining, so I'll have to follow up in the morning and see if everything's hunky-dory now. Dropped temps down to 59-60C at the moment and still getting WORK_QUIT on every single p8900. Is there driver revision that's getting better results?

There is a new core 17 available. Have you tried 7im's suggestion of deleting the FahCore_17 on your system so the client downloads the latest one?

I have read at least one report where a complete uninstall including data and reinstall had solved a similar problem for someone else. Perhaps that's something you could try if deleting the core doesn't help. When you install again do not install as administrator. Simply double click on the installer and if Windows asks for permission give it. The Data Directory should end up in your appdata folder (%AppData%/FAHClient), not C:/ProgramData/FAHClient as your log shows.

I did, but I can try it again via a complete reinstall. I also knocked the CPU slot's thread count from 4 to 3; it ran a complete p8900 shortly thereafter which ended in a WORK_QUIT again.

Sorry, I should have noticed that.

Reinstalling will get you the new core as long as you include the data when uninstalling. FAHClient's data should not end up in c:\ProgramData and may part of the problem.

Have you tried running FAHBench as codysluder suggested? It might show a problem we're just not seeing.

Heh, no prob. I've completed a clean reinstall - I selected 'install only for me' this time, and it dropped the data directory in %AppData%/Roaming/FAHClient - hopefully that's close enough. I'll have to wait until later to run FAHBench, but in the meantime we'll see if the new core makes any difference.

%AppData% -> When entered with the % sign, will open up C:\Users\PantherX\AppData\Roaming
%AppData%\FAHClient -> When entered exactly, will open up C:\Users\PantherX\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\

The latest version of FahCore_17 for Windows is Version 0.0.52 which runs on AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

Well, temp drops and a reinstall with the 0.0.52 core haven't helped; it's still returning a WORK_QUIT for every p8900, which has been all it's getting as of late, and the GPU temp hasn't been out of the upper 60s. I'll have a chance to check it out with FAHBench later today.
