Not getting core 17 WU's
Since Oct 22, all I have been getting is core 15 work units. Before that, I was getting core 17 work units. I have my GPU slot set to client-type: advanced, and have changed nothing. Is there a shortage of core 17 work units? Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? I understand that I'm still doing science, but my PPD has taken a serious hit (from 60K+ to about 16K). I would like to know what is going on.
Thanks for listening,
Mark

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
my uneducated guess would be that this is kind of bad luck. We have also some team members "suffering" from it. They got some Core 17 in the past and now mainly Core 15. I believe its because of the WU pool on the server are right now filled with more Core 15 WU which need to get processed. Core 17 will come back once this wave of Core 15 is gone (not sure if the last wave though).

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
I at first considered it to be luck of the draw. But reviewing my logs, I was getting nothing but core 17 units until 10/22 at 19:20, when I started receiving only core 15 units. Since then, it has been nothing but core 15 WU's. If it is simply a lack of core17 WU's then that's fine, of course. But considering they were conducting maintenance on the servers around the time this started, I have begun to suspect something other than luck of the draw.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
I've seen several people observe that a slot tends to stick with the same work server for a few days, then start getting work from a different one for a few days, etc. I've definitely seen it on my end, where my GPUs will get nothing but project 8900's for a while, then go to nothing but 7810/7811, then back to 8900. The servers handing out core 17 projects may have been part of the maintenance, in which case you'd have started getting core 15 projects, and you may still be in that same-server holding pattern.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
Zagen30 - Thanks, that makes sense. I too have seen the cycles of 8900's, 7810/7811, etc. I hope that is all that is going on here.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
7im - You asked "Like what?" I had begun to suspect something had happened during server maintenance that caused the servers to stop sending me core 17 WU's. Zagen30's post, however, makes more sense. Thanks.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
Please note that in your log, you have the following setting enabled:
<cpu-affinity v='true'/>
It is advised to be off unless you absolutely need it. In most cases, it might end up doing more harm than good. While your configuration allows FahCore_17 WUs, there is always a possibility of getting FahCore_15 WUs since your GPU can run it.
If you believe that your GPU Slot is "stuck", you may want to set it to finish, remove it, save the configuration and then add a GPU Slot again (with client-type set to advanced) and see if you get FahCore_17 WUs or not.
Also note, all the Servers are up and running and there isn't any known issues that I am aware of.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
I, too, have had similar suspicions, but it has been my impression that this was a characteristic of V6 and not likely to be true with V7. I don't know any way to collect enough information to prove anything, however.Zagen30 wrote:I've seen several people observe that a slot tends to stick with the same work server for a few days, then start getting work from a different one for a few days, etc. I've definitely seen it on my end, where my GPUs will get nothing but project 8900's for a while, then go to nothing but 7810/7811, then back to 8900.
V6 would first contact the sever from which the WU was downloaded and upload the results, followed by a request to download a new WU. The client might "remember" the previous server's connection.
V7 first contacts the AS and is assigned to a Work Server from which to download a new WU and later uploads the finished WU to the server from which the WU was obtained so it's less likely (but still possible) that the client influences the assignment to a WS for downloading. In theory, the AS bases that assignment on the hardware characteristics that the client reports to the AS. Has anybody traced the data the client sends to the AS to see if the IP information is in the initial transaction?
Recently both servers for the Zeta core have been assigning WUs pretty heavily, but so have the servers for OPENMMGPU. The AS is probably trying to keep the load more-or-less balanced.
It should also be noted that if any projects were moved from ADVANCED to FAH, it would have a pretty significant change it the assignment proportions.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
Finished the core 15 WU, deleted the gpu slot, restarted the client, added the slot with client-type: advanced, and again I ended up with a core 15 work unit. (I also set CPU affinity to off, as PantherX suggested). Just seems odd that after weeks of only receiving core 17, I am suddenly receiving only core 15.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
Remove the <cause v='ALZHEIMERS'/> preference and see what WU you are assigned next. It is plausible that the Servers now (partially?) support the cause preference but I haven't heard any announcement, just a guess for now.

Re: Not getting core 17 WU's
Ok, removed the preference for Alzheimers. 6 hours till the current WU finishes, then we'll see. Thanks for the suggestion.
